Backup Assistant Wipes Out Free 411 Numbers

I’ve been using Verizon’s handy Backup Assistant for about a year now. The fee is waived if you sign up for their My Account.

When I activated my two enV² phones last week, I used Backup Assistant to download my phonebook entries from Verizon’s server to both of my new phones.

In order to avoid paying Verizon $1.49 for each 411 Directory Assistance call, I’ve been using Goog 411 http://www.google.com/goog411/ and Free 411 http://www.free411.com/index.php They work very well and are both free, but Google’s both reads the number to you and connects you directly. Free 411 just reads the number to you and you either have to remember it or write it down before manually dialing.

Hereâ ...

Hmmm, you might be on to something. I tried calling Google 411 last weekend and each time the call dropped or was disconnected. I called Verizon's 411 and it went thru with no problem.

Yes it's a big conspiracy to gain a HUGE profit from $1.49 of 411 calls.....are you kidding me?? That's like people claiming Verizon purposely sends your bill late to gain profit on that $5 late fee...PLEASE! Backup Assistant is maintained seperately than Verizon and if the number didn't backup to your phone, check the website and make sure it even transferred there correctly. There have been glitches in Backup Assistant before...and they have nothing to do with Verizon Wireless...hell they give you the service for free when you sign up for a free service (so greedy!). As for the call dropping or disconnecting...check your signal next time...and the call only drops if you hear the phone beep and say "call was lost". Lastly...If you have ...

You are correct, the 411 profits ARE huge. But you are probably too young to remember that Directory Assistance didn't cost ANYTHING until about ten years ago when the landline phone companies decided to squeeze tens of millions of bucks more per week out of their customers with the 411 surcharge. That's when they got rid of many thousands of Directory Assistance operators by automating the process, often resulting in poorer results and more frustration for subscribers.

It's the same game as when you make a local landline call from a hotel room for $3.00. The hotels used to make mil...

For one...you have no idea how old I am...so nice try. I remember all too well the free directory assistance. You apparently missed the entire purpose of what i was saying. How does the free My Account come out of your pocket? The only thing it costs you is your internet service provider. It saves you time and money by not having to call Customer Service and more and more features are added to allow you to handle your own account. And yea, Navigator is $9.99 a month or $2.99 a day...it's called another option. I've seen people use $30/month of 411 calls, so this would be cheaper then wouldn't it...And good for you and your Garmin. Last I checked, it was a Verizon Wireless forum, thus talking about Verizon Wireless services and features...

Liquidfire, put the crack down. This is an intervention. The drugs have distorted your sense of reality. You wife and children love you. Lil' Bobby doesn't like to see his mommy cry herself to sleep. Seriously, think before you type.

It may have had to do with the field you have your "number" saved in. You wrote them above like web addresses which means you likely have them saved in a space that does not auto back-up. VZW does not have any systems in place to rob you of your contacts. If you have Osama Bin Laden's number in your phonebook, VZW will not even disclose that let alone take it away.... It is your phone.

Too funny. Verizon used to give us free pamphlets teaching customers how to text Google for numbers and stuff. You need a better conspiracy theory.
