Backup Assistant Wipes Out Free 411 Numbers
When I activated my two enV² phones last week, I used Backup Assistant to download my phonebook entries from Verizon’s server to both of my new phones.
In order to avoid paying Verizon $1.49 for each 411 Directory Assistance call, I’ve been using Goog 411 http://www.google.com/goog411/ and Free 411 http://www.free411.com/index.php They work very well and are both free, but Google’s both reads the number to you and connects you directly. Free 411 just reads the number to you and you either have to remember it or write it down before manually dialing.

You are correct, the 411 profits ARE huge. But you are probably too young to remember that Directory Assistance didn't cost ANYTHING until about ten years ago when the landline phone companies decided to squeeze tens of millions of bucks more per week out of their customers with the 411 surcharge. That's when they got rid of many thousands of Directory Assistance operators by automating the process, often resulting in poorer results and more frustration for subscribers.
