Basic Blackberry Question

I have an old (pre-Treo) Palm Tungston and a vx8300. Unfortunately both are dying (the 8300 won't hold a charge and the touch screen on the Palm is shot) and I'm sick of carrying two devices. I want to get a smartphone and am one of many with the i760/6800 decision. I never considered a Blackberry because some key professional software wasn't offered on that platform. Now one main program will be BB compatible and am now considering the Pearl or Curve when they come out (I don't need the dual CDMA/GSM version). However, having never used a BB device and being used to a Palm OS, I'm not 100% sure. For those with familiarity with both systems (or windows mobile), what,if anything, am I losing with the blackberry (aside from a touch scree...

1. What programs are VITAL for you to have?
2. Go into a store and play with all the platforms (Palm, Windows, BB) to see which you are comfortable with.
3. I would normally say play it safe and go with a comfortable platform, Treo 700p, but that thing is dated.
4. The new BB pricing makes it more of a contender if you're not using the net that much.

Not really an answer to your question but more info is really needed to make a suggestion.

1. Programs:
a. Epocrates - medical software (soon to be BB compatible)
b. Scientific calculator
c. Banking software (for checking accounts mostly)
d. Date book
e. Memo pad for random notes, etc.

2. I'm used to Palm, but am kind of sick of it's limitations. I was leaning toward Windows mobile anyway. That's why I wasn't really thinking about the 755 when (if) it ever comes out.

3. I'm sure I'll use the net some, but not the primary purpose.

I guess what I'm looking for is - are the more traditional PDAs more flexible than blackberries?

Yes, Palm and Windows Mobile (especially Windows Mobile) are much more flexible than BlackBerry. BlackBerry focuses more on e-mail and less on PDA. In my opinion, the BlackBerry calendar is only slightly better than you would find on a regular phone.

I had a Treo 650 (Palm), and now I have a Samsung i730 (Windows Mobile).

I'd so go with Windows.

Blackberry is more stable but you'll have a learning curve. Also, if you do a lot of memos, consider the keyboard. I'm quite fond of the 8830, the most frequent issues I run into is people not knowing how to use it. Odd since we have 'manual in motion' demos on all of the advance devices at vzw.com/data.

Obviously you know the Palm OS so that will be familiar. Personally I consider Palm to be more stable than Windows Mobile, but it's just because so many Windows Mobile users forget to actually exit out of programs and leave them running in the background. That OS will leave multiple applications open at the same time, eat your memory and freeze your phone. Make sure if you go with a Windows Mobile OS that you do not do this. Have I emph...

I'm a little OCD. After I'm done using a program, I immediately go in and end it. I can't have one program running when I'm not using it. 😉
