Crippled...

Why are the VZW phones so crippled? I might sound like a troll here, but today I saw the En-V, ( not for the first time of course ), and the Chocolate, and realized Verizon is cutting down alot of the phone's potentials.. I don't really know, I was just wondering why Verizon does this with these phones? T-Mobile seems pretty fair with their phones...

Just curious, what has been stripped off of the env? it is one thing to compare a phone that many carriers have.

These two phones are exclusive to VZW.

EN-V

1. The only bluetooth protocol missing is transferring sounds as ring tones? (Sprint also disables this and possibly ATT)

2. flash UI themes

The new Chocolate VX-8550

1. As far as i know. (i only work for VZW) The only phone to be able to send a 30 sec video.

2. Bluetooth, same as above

3. Also has flash UI.

So once again please explain how these devices are crippled?

But Vzw-csr, those are two of the VZW phones that have the 'less crippled' bluetooth, right?

I think that on the Samsung u540 I was trying out last month, about the only BT file transfer it would do was 'Object Push for vCards only'.

Kinda sad. ☹️

Basically, VZW seems to be crippling some of its high-end phones less, but most of their midrange and entry-level stuff is still plenty crippled.

Would you agree?

I can agree with you there. We are not perfect.

But if you think back 1-2 years ago. Remember how bad it was?

I have not personally tested the bluetooth on the u540, but damn that phone is nice.

It's nice, 'cept for the horrible speakerphone echo issues. Things are ok on your end, but on the other person's end... yikes. Check out my review of the phone.

Unfortunately, I had to return it. Will likely be getting an LG 8300 tomorrow, or over the weekend.

That sux man, Although you will enjoy the 8300 as a lot of people have. Have you thought about the 8700. This phone is also nice.

Even after dropping on the ground you cant notice any scratches or dents.

I did think about the 8700, and with my NE2 that phone is actually cheap, but I'm not sure I like the battery life on it, and the speakerphone isn't as good as the 8300s. I also hear the reception isn't quite up to the 8300's standard?

I dunno... I guess its still in the running, if mainly 'cuz it looks great and fits in my jeans change pocket very well. 😎

Your thoughts on 8300 vs 8700?

Well as far as track record goes....8300 hands down.

8700
from my personal use at work seems to be a solid phone from LG. Very fasy UI. Sound quality is good. Have not tested the speakerphone though.

VZW disallows phones that can "steal" copywrited material. So the phones are limited that they can no transfer things you buy from GIN/Vcast. That is why you will see phones that show object transfers limited to user generated content.
I really dont understand why people think the manufactures try to make everyphone support everything and then assume whenever...

Not when other carriers have the same phone and can do all and more then the verizon version of the same phone.

Well, here's a Q, then: Will all current VZW phones with bluetooth allow me to transfer photos from my phone to my computer?

I'm curious, because that's not really copyrighted material, and my Nokia 6256 could do it, but I do not know about all VZW phones in general being able to.

'Object Push for VCards only' would seem to imply that I can't, unless I can do it through the FTP (File Movement) profile, but many VZW phones don't have that profile, it seems:

not all of them, no.

the new choc, the 8700 and the ENV i think are the only ones (aside from the PDA's)

is that really what this crippling business is all about? Thats all people want to do is send a pic to their computer via bluetooth? Isn't that why everything has a memory card slot now?
...
SystemShock

Aug 20, 2007, 11:34 PM
Yeah, but a mem card costs money, and you may need to buy a reader too (some comps have one built-in, some don't).

Also, some older phones have bluetooth but no mem card slot. Like the RAZR V3c, for example.

So I guess some ppl do transfer via pic messaging, and VZW makes money off that.

Seems like a dumb reason to cripple bluetooth, hope that's not really the way they're thinking at VZW HQ. But in the era of $2.99 ringtones, nothin' surprises me anymore. ☹️

My Slvr allows me to transfer pics from the phone to a PC through BT. It won't let me write to the phone, if I had a memory card that may be a different story...

ATT doesn't take away the obex profile, but they do lock the ringtones themselves. If it is a user created ringtone, you can transfer it to your hearts content.

Does the envy let you bluetooth pics from one phone to another? I thought this was something else that VZW regularly cripples.

Yes I know. The PC magazine reviewer has changed his statement made about Bluetooth on the new V9m too.

From the Contacts list you can press Options, Send VCard.
From the Sounds list you can press Send, Bluetooth.
From the My Pictures list you can press Options, Send, Bluetooth.

The phone discovers DUN and OBEX as well.

t-mobile doesn't sell licenced content, thats why they dont have to restrict the connection of the equipment for transfer. AT&T loses a lot of revinue with the SIM card thing, you can download a game, xferr it to a sim card, and copy it to your friends phone. then they get a free copy of the game! so all that income we get, goes right back to our network and our apps. and they pay damn good to corporate employees, thats why your cust service ratings are so high all over. every other company gives away the bank to maintain "customer satisfaction". verizon does it with our network and our policies, and our willingness to change those policies to adapt to the changing network
