New To Cell World, could use some advice..

I am thinking about purchasing a cell phone. But before I do, I need some advice. Whether to go with a CDMA service or GSM.
I would like to get a camera phone, but I need service from Orlando to the Georgia border and it HAS TO COVER all of Manhatten and all of Long Island, New York. These are the areas of my up and coming business venture.
I'm not really interested in the other 48 ststes, ONLY in these two.
Thank you.

VZW has you covered in all respects... No doubt that cingular has you covered too, but My gut is with VZW.

Same here. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say their Verizon phone works where others won't.

...and then you have my friend, whose Verizon phone won't work at all in my house, whereas my TMobile phone and the ATT and Sprint phones of other friends work just fine... I had Verizon for 3.5 years, and I was never once able to complete or receive a call in my bedroom... and just to be clear, this is in a major metropolitan area, not out in the boonies by any means. It's too bad that a clever ad campaign can't actually improve service, huh?

I'll admit... not every carrier is going to work absolutely everywhere. There will always be certain spots that my not work. It all depends on where the towers are. Even though you are in a city there still may not be a tower that is really close. There could also be buildings or trees or anything between you and the tower that could have an affect.

Borrow phones of different providers from your friends, and try them in locations that are important to you. Such as home, work, etc.

When you sign up with a plan, you'll have time where you can cancel without penalty (15 days with Verizon). Try your phone everywhere that you can!

but make sure to be really to fork out the $$$ for the phones(which are primitive) and #646# will be your new best friend because you don't get the minutes the other carriers give.

I was in Orlando for a week in May. A friend's Cingular phone (GSM) worked great. My wife's ATTWS (TDMA) phone worked great. My Verizon phone couldn't get anything but an analog signal all week. It worked just fine, but where was the digital? I can't comment on the other cities since I haven't been there.

A few things that are important to me if looking for a carrier/phone...

No matter which company you decide to go with, if you will be doing a lot of car traveling look for a phone that allows you to plug in an external antenna. Look for a rubber covering on the backside of the phone at the base of the phone's own stub antenna and that'll let you know the phone you're holding accepts one.

Some phones are better than others at receiving & using RF signal than others. Check out the forums here and see who gripes/praises the various phones and you'll eliminate some quickly and make a good choice.

Turning to companies, keep in mind that brochures are pretty but don't tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I know the tec...
