ok so My roomate has verizon. he has two phones with them and insurance and all that jazz. well his brother forgot his phone on the car drove off and ran over it in his driveway. so he figured ya know i have insurance just pay the deductable and get a new phone right. well verizon told him he has to get a police report to be able to use his insurance. What??? does that make sense? why do you need a police report when you ran over your own phone on accident. so he talked to a rep on the phone his manager as well as a in store rep and they all said the same thing. can anyone explain this to me? I am a cingular rep and it totally confused me so i called and asked myself and they told me the same thing as well. I think thats crazy

He should get the number for the insurance he has and call them. I have never had a customer that needed a police report when they still had the phone in their possession. What state are you in? Maybe things are different?

Verizon does't provide the insurance. The insurance company (Assurion I guess) makes the rules.

While it wouldn't suprise me if Verizon started requiring it as well, the requirement of a police report is due to Asurion's own policy.

I've seen the insurance require a police report in a case where a previous claim had very recently been made. Do you know if this happened?

he has never made a claim in the two years he has had the phones. i think he did a warranty exchange but no insurance claims. but why get the cops involved with something stupid like that. you are just wasting the cops and your time ya know.

You only need a police report if the phone is not in your possession and it is claimed as lost or stolen.

If you still have the phone, you have to send it to them after you get the new one.

A police report is only needed in the event that the phone is lost or stolen. Basically it's only required if the origional phone cannot be sent to Asurion upon receipt of the replacement. If the phone is merely damaged, no report needed.

vertigo1 is correct. Police report only needed if phone is lost or stolen. Whoever told you that you needed a police report for a damaged phone was on crack, a douche, stupid, a woman or a combination of the above.

Our city police WILL NOT issue a police report for a lost or stolen phone. I have to agree, is my tax dollar well spent having some policeman filling out and filing a report for a lost cell phone?

Agreed, but from the insurance companies point of view, it helps prevent fraud. At least if you lie about losing your phone and get a replacement they can get you for filing a false report....if they find out.

I just got a brand new treo 650 from assurion...no police report. You need to call assurion directly. NOT VERIZON.

Chris

--you might need a police report for your regular insurance to make a claim. Not for phone insurance.
