MOTOROLA and VERIZON UI -- what's the deal???

This thread is not for ranting and raving about the Verizon UI, I just have a question about it in relation to Verizon's Motorola phones.

I have owned the RAZR and the KRZR, and then I recently got the LG 8700. Along the way I have demoed or played with almost every phone that has come out for Verizon over the last 3 years.

My question is, why has the standardized UI progressed so much on the LG phones that Verizon sells but has basically stayed exactly the same on all the Motorolas that they sell?

The UI on the new 8700 is actually really, really nice, and it seems crazy that they would keep that junky, boring one on such sleek looking phones like the KRZR and possibly the RAZR Maxx (so I've heard).

Maybe some of you that work...

Oh interesting I didn't realize that. So you're saying that when Verizon wanted to standardize things they just adopted LG's UI? Is that why they all started out as the generic one (that is still on the Motorolas)?

I thought it was a "Verizon UI" though...not the "LG UI"...when everyone complains about not liking it they are always talking about how Verizon standardized its UI.

What control does LG have over Verizon as a whole that they can design the UI and put it on all of Verizon's phones (especially ones made by other manufacturers)?

It seems so weird to me that Motorola would let the UI on their phones stay like that when (IMO) they are known for so much sleeker looking designs/menus/graphics etc.

Thanks for the info! I...

so it must just be a coincidence that the VZW theme color is red, and on most VZW phones, you can't change the RED border that's plastered on the top and bottom of all phones.

Is it actually written and published by LG? I know it is modeled after LG's original UI as it had the simplest operation and most user accessibility... but I was never sure if it was actually published by them.

Motorola's OS is terrible & They can't write a user manual to save their life. I always assumed this is why the UI on motorola was bad. The more you polish crap it is still crap. :-)

As I understand it, LG was commissioned by VZW to design and trial the UI on the VX7000. After resounding success, they decided to go full bore with it.

I think the only reason that Moto still uses the standard red and not the flash UI like Samsung and LG might either be licensing or the fact that the VZW UI on Motos is a Java applet that sits on top of Moto's existing UI. This would explain the pitiful delays when navigating through Moto handsets.

Hope that makes sense.

I do know the UI has somehow been implemented differently on the Razr Maxx. This fixes the slowness problem. The user is now directly working with the phone rather then the UI telling the motorola software to tell the phone what to do. Maybe this will allow things to change on future Motorola's. It seems like they had a little learning curve to get through first.

Well for starters it's kind of hard to progress with newer UI on Motorola's when there aren't really any newer one's released since the KRZR.

From what I understand, Verizon created the new UI, NOT LG. However, it appears Verizon took cues from LG's former interface. I've also heard that Motorolas had more difficulty implementing the UI, hence the slowness and hybridized menus. The newer Motorola interface (which is suppressed by the Verizon UI) is actually very attractive and responsive. Even the LG VX-8700 interface is not as clean and refined as what's found on the Alltel RAZR or KRZR. As to why the MAXX won't have the flash UI is beyond me, but on a positive note there is probably a lot of things that can be unlocked and modified with it. As many have stated, the flash UI looks better, but as far as functionality and customization, it's still quite limited.
