Any former Verizon users at US Cellular?

I'm considering changing to US Cellular from Verizon, getting it's nationwide no-roaming plan. Monthly charge will be quite a bit less. I made some test calls from US Cell store, and call quality seems great.
Any of you had good luck in changing to US Cellular. ANy problems traveling, using phone out of US Cell's own area? I know they are highly ranked in Chicago, right up with Verizon.

I've traveled all over the US and eastern Canada and never had a problem with USC. It can take a few minutes to find a signal once the plane lands; and you may not get a voice mail indication if there is one waiting; but I think that is universal.

Thanks for the info.

I assume you do get incoming calls when you travel (they don't go straight to voice mail).

I have no idea how the tech works, and I'm sure somebody will tell me I'm wrong, but seems like I have to make a call (usually to vm just to check) whenever I get to where I'm going in order for USCC to know where I am. Then I start getting calls. I the past I would fail to do that and people would call my hotel mad because my phone wasn't working.

You would need to make a call to get the phone registered on a tower when you get there since it would still be on the tower from your area. The vm indicator comes at the time of registering on a tower, sometimes takes longer since your roaming and has to go through the network of whoever your roaming on. Any other questions just reply back.

USCC is a great carrier, they offer lower price plans, and have good service. I use both USCC and verizon right now, will only be using one at the end of the year. Both work good as far as service goes. The main question you have to ask yourself is, do you do a lot of traveling? If you do a lot of traveling, then look at the USCC maps and see if you travel outside the home area a lot, which the home area is the local plan. If you travel outside those areas a lot and use your phone alot when outside those areas, I would reccomend that you stay with verizon. USCC has a 50% rule that they dont point out very clearly. What that means, is, that if you use over 50% or your minutes outside the home area, they can shut your service off, and ...

Thanks so much for the info!

I don't think I have to every worry about having less than 1/2 my minutes in my home area. I travel 3 or 4 times a year out of state, and never for more than a week at a time.
When out of USCC home area, such as in Florida or California main cities, do you still receive text messages, and receive calls from out of town OK (without going directly to voicemail)?

I go to California myself a few times a year and I've never had any problems receiving calls or text messages. Also, if it fits you, texting doesn't roam. I just text a lot when I'm not in my local area since I don't have a National Plan. 😁

I was with Verizon/Ameritech for over 7 years. I switched 6 months ago. I am in Chicago and love the service. I still like Verizon but USCC is just as good if not better and there's more value. I have a national plan.

Open a temp line at USCC and forward calls from your Verizon line to the temp USCC line. Use some or all of your 30-day guarantee. If you decide to switch, USCC will port your Verizon number over and remove the temp line. This is what I did.

I used to have verizon. I have us cellular now and i love it. Verizon wasn't a bad service they just didn't help me much if i called in always rude and very unpleasent. Now when i call us cell they seem to actually care. the service has never failed me.

Im not a former verizon customer, but while were on the subject, i kinda think its funny that verizon uses uscell toweres at least here in maine, my dad leases the land to a 340ft us cell tower accross the road, and verizon just got done a few days ago puting in a building bigger then the us cellular building thats there now, and there leasing it form uscellular.

ah well, theres my 2 cents worth of useless info

In Maine (and the other Northern New England states) Verizon and its predecessors decided to largely ignore those markets and instead concentrated on Boston, Providence, and the surrounding areas. So that gave US Cellular a chance to get control of those licenses (mostly on the A side).

Now Verizon is attempting to fill in their footprint by buying up PCS licenses in the areas where they have no ocverage of their own (parts of Vermont, Maine, NH). But by now USC has built up a fan base by providing excellent service, so it'll be tough to dislodge them as the market leader in those areas.

whats funny about that, you dont think USCC uses Verizon's towers. USCC uses a lot of companies towers, they have to in order to offer a national plan, just like verizon, alltel, cingular, or whatever company, they all use each other's towers, it is called roaming agreements, this helps companies provide large calling areas, it benifits us customers.

He is talking about using their towers in areas they claim ownership in, I think. In Maine US Cellular claims the entire state as its local, owned area. but he is talking about verizon wireless stores in the area, which means they must claim it too, however that is possible. probably the difference between A and B

Verizon is a great company and its never a bad choice to stay with them, but for alot of people US Cellular is better. In Chicago especially, our signal is next to flawless. Acording to a CBS news report done in early 2005, US Celluar has the best reception and fewest dropped calls of any carrier in the chicagoland area. Verizon coming up second of course. Also, another good thing about US Cellular is they do not outsource ANY of their customer service reps. All of the customer service calls are routed to a location near where your service is. So if your in chicago, you will speak to a CSR in bolingbrook, IL. If your in wisoconsin, then youll talk to someone in wisconsion. So if you say, "Im not getting a signal on Clark and Addison,...
