Trust me on this, I sold these to a business customer who travels to China on a regular basis.

The phone has both CDMA and GSM capability.

CDMA will function within its standard coverage areas, the USA and a few other countries.

GSM will function when roaming outside the USA in Europe and Asia. This function is supported after you insert a SIM card from the area you are roaming in and is inserted under the battery cover.

It will work just fine. The sim card is feature is turned off, but it can be turned on when needed by the user. The manual has step by step instructions for this process.

PS. I LOVE my 8830.

I concur with Adam West and computerking... It WILL work. USCC just does not support it, so if you have any problems with it working on a GSM network...don't even bother calling USCC.

PS I LOVE MY 8830 TOO.

Yes it will work that is why it says Global Edition on the front. You would just have to buy a Prepaid Sim card. Your data wouldnt work and you would have a different phone number, but you could still make and recieve calls from your own handset.

I think my IQ dropped just by read harmls stupid post. how stupid can you be not to know the 8830 is a world phone? USCC forced our market to sit in a 5 hours training for the 8830 specifically. Guess what it also has a built in GPS, NOT LOCATION BASED SERVICEs like all other phones that uscc offers, a full blown GPS. Poor harmls

It is true, the 8830 World Edition, not global, will work everywhere there is cell service in the world. US Cellular does not remove the ability to put a SIM card in, and yes, the phone runs on both CDMA and GSM. Data, too. Just remember that if you have a USCC phone and use a SIM, your phone number is not going to be the same when you use it. It will be based on the SIM.
