Network coverage
Does anyone know when Sprint will be expanding CDMA coverage into Nextel native network areas? It seems like Cingular and Verizon are the only carriers concerned with a nice large coverage area...
So hopefully Sprint has been working behind the scenes to get more customers by adding towers.

Verizon's coverage is a patchwork of various types of towers (mostly due to purchasing smaller carriers, afaik) whereas Sprint's coverage is all PCS CDMA. Of course they're expanding coverage into Nextel areas. That's going to be one of the major focuses this year and into next year. The biggest hurdle right now is the Nextel Partners acquisition which should make things easier once that is complete later this year. Give it time, nothing happens overnight. In the meantime enjoy the fact that most new Fair & Flex plans include free roaming.

Since Sprint is 100% PCS or on the 1900 band. Does that mean that the 1900 band has trouble penetrating through certain walls? So indoor coverage with Sprint isn't all that great? Thanks

I have Sprint. I think people confuse the frequency interfering with a building...when I really think it is more location and local topography than the frequency. In the plaza that I am in...there is a Sprint tower on the other side of the supermarket...right above it. If I go into said supermarket...my signal drops to nothing, even though I am actually closer to the tower. It has to be the make-up of the building. However in other places I'll be rather far from a tower, yet have a great signal in the building I'm in. It's more the lay of the land and the area your in. I've never gotton service with Cingular in any areas I've lived so I never kept them...

If you're right below a cell site or right next to one for that matter, your cell service, believe it or not, may not be as good as a little bit further away, although in the case of the supermarket, I'm sure the makeup of that building is partly to do with it, since it is difficult sometimes getting any sort of signal in larger type grocery stores

verizon phones do roam, the phone just doesnt show you that it does....how do they get money out of the customer for roaming? its already built into your plan pricing.

All Verizon phones have a roaming indicator. Mine has gone in both solid & flashing mode. My current phone (Samsung SCH-a650) also says entended network or roaming in the banner line when off network, and Verizon Wireless on Verizon's network. I have Verizon Wireless and know that their phones have roaming indicators, whether in a symbol (usually a triangle), banner, or both (as in my phone). Verizon still has roaming whether on the America's Choice or whatever plan: the question is whether you are billed for it or not based on your plan. Primeco was CDMA, hence the crappy Audiovox phone(s) with the wood-grain trim... The only other thing Sprint's buying-out are all those little affiliates screaming "breach of contract" from the Nextel merger.

well, excuse me for being wrong about a freakin' INDICATOR! the point is, they DO roam when needed and it IS built into plan pricing.....bad thing about that is, you pay for roaming (because its built into plan price) wether you roam or not. And Sprint has bought out several affifiates just as VZW has.

WOW!!! and VZW still can charge extra for roaming on top of the roaming already built into the plan!!

Roaming agreements make up for a lot of Sprint's coverage, but they seem to be making up for that with including roaming w/out the extra charges, on most of their plans.

I heard at a meeting that we have New towers in rural areas here in the Central Valley where there was only previously only Nextel. I guess they are waiting for those counties to OK Sprint to turn the towers on.

Sprint has bought up alot of Nextels' partners and affiliates. Full system integration is supposed to be completed by xmas this year with expected launch of "cross platform" phones being launched during the same time frame. They are upgraded the towers to cdma and w.e spectrum they are supposed to be on for Sprint.
Once this happens everyone will definately see a huge boost in coverage accross the country. The are looking to phase out Nextel's iden network by 2010 but thats just a rumor since they can use it for other money driven purposes but again dont hold me to this info.
