Sprints website says 4g is 3 - 6 megs.
at&t 3g is 3.6 and 7.2 by EOY.
Verizon is currently in the 3 megs range with 3g

Heck, even T-mo is faster.. what gives?

Those are not the max Speeds wimax can reach and Sprint 4g is the fastest overall and has no data cap because it is unlimited.

There are current articles publicizing data that T-Mo's upgraded data network is nearly always faster than Sprint's WiMax is right now.

Of course, T-Mo's speed advantage might not last, and it will take them awhile to gain significant coverage with HSPA+, but WiMax so far is clearly not THAT much better than every other carrier's 3G. It's a little better than some, not as good as others, and the coverage are is small and growing very slowly. Much more slowly than the other carrier's can roll out speed upgrades to their existing 3G networks. So far, out in the real world, WiMax is just not THAT much better.

Im' afraid also that anyone who believes Sprint's data is now, and will continue to be, completely unlimited, is headed for a rude ...

I agree when I was in OKC last week I was getting over 5Meg on the downstream on T-mo with latency rates below 100ms. It's a shame that T-mo spends more money being faster then they do expanding their 3G foot print.

You obviously have not seen pc mags lastest 2010 fastest network results. Tmobiles new 3g network is inconsistant and is very limited in coverage as well, tmobile will most likely change its unlimited data plans long before Sprint does because its hspa network data is very expensive to produce. Which is why tmobile is trying so hard to find someone to partner with for 4g. While Sprints 4g network is the fastest on avg and is a lot cheaper to produce. This is why Sprint has the best data plans with unlimited 3g/4g access. I would hardly call Sprints deployment of Wimax slow its already in 43 different markets and growing. Sprints data is at the top of the food chain. 😎

Sprint-Nextel and Clear certainly have a huge amount of potential, and they do have something of a lead in the US market with their WiMax buildout. But Sprint's overall record in terms of execution of plans is not exactly the best in the industry.

Witness their rollout of EV-DO rev A. Initially Sprint had a good lead on Verizon, then Sprint effectively stopped their rollout and left all the customers scratching their heads, while Verizon steamed past and finished out their rev A rollout (main benefit is data speeds and now for VZ a competitive PTT service). Put simply, Sprint dropped the ball.

Even if T-Mo's network is spotty right now, the point is that where their HSPA+ upgrades are in place, several industry websites have indicated ...

A slight correction:
Verizon averages about 900kbps - 1.4mbps depending on the market you are in. EVDO rev A is only capable of bursting at 3.2 mbps but you will never get that speed consistently.

T-Mobile's HSPA+ is almost comparable to WIMAX with speeds averaging about 6 mbps in Philadelphia's test. They can burst at 21 mbps.

AT&T is capable of busting at 7.2 mbps but averages about the same as Verizon does in most markets. In some areas they will get up to about 3 mbps.

WIMAX (802.16e) is capable of bursting at 40 mbps but average speeds are about 6-20 mbps depending on the market. Clear often throttles the speeds to maintain a consistent experience for their customers. By the end of next year the next generation of WIMAX, 802....
