Bring back the old school Sanyo clamshell type phones. I would love to have an updated version of an 8100 or a 7500. It seems like Sprint is moving towards only carrying Smart Phones and trashy, cheap looking messaging phones.

I hate to bust your bubble but as soon as T-Mobile flips the switch next month on their network upgrade Sprint's 4G network will be a dinosaur! And T-Mo will have great phones that will work on their new network including the new Google Phone (Nexus One) which is a game changer!

I truly dislike marketing, it makes things so confusing for the average consumer. The HSDPA 21 Mbps in no way guarantees that the user will get anything close to those speeds.

HSDPA does not add more feeding fiber lines to give faster internet to the customer. Instead it is essentially an upgrade in repeater equipment and software that attempts to optimize what little fiber it has. In favorable conditions (good signal and few connections to the repeater - essentially a test environment) it is possible that the user could see up to 21Mbps on the latest HSDPA incarnation. However, in the same conditions with WiMax you can top out at just over 40Mbps.

CLEARWIRE is not Sprint's 4G. Clearwire uses WiMax 802.16e which has average speeds of 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps. CLEAR is Sprint's 4g. CLEAR operates on WiMax 802.16m and has average speeds of 3Mbps to 6Mbps.
Two completely different data codecs, speeds, and consumer equipment. Customers in CLEAR markets who have not upgraded to CLEAR equipment from old CLEARWIRE equipment will not get to take advantage of the upgrade.

Every link you have provided shows no real world result comparison of 21Mbps HSDPA and CLEAR. In addition, the one link you posted with 7.2Mbps HSDPA was in a non-launched market (meaning it was very likely that the tester was the only attempted connection to that repeater) vs the CLEARWIRE 802.16e beta WiMax market Sprint had in Baltimore in late 2008.

In addition: I will concede that LTE is faster than WiMax. I will not debate that fact with you. LTE is faster than average wireline broadband. However, both WiMax and LTE technologies are built with evolution in mind. They can only expand and grow. WiMax can become LTE and LTE can become faster than what it is now.

Please tell him after being a very loyal customer since 1998 it was nice having Sprint as my cell phone provider. However....after removing of the Voice Dial service (which I enjoyed) to the final straw of disabling tethering on my smart phone (so much for that Simply Everything Plan).....its time for me to move on. As soon as the Google phone aka Nexus One is released (January 5, 2010) I will be saying good bye. As a user who understands the current conundrums of the wireless handset market I would put a bunch of cash on the fact that Sprint is running into problems with battery life and this is slowing down development of a 4G phone.
Dan Hesse and other mobile moguls have gone public with the desire for battery innovation. The sad truth of the matter is that 4G is a smaller network. To have a phone moving around in and around a 4G city constantly trying to decide whether 4G or 3G signal is stronger is going to kill your battery. In addition the much faster speeds of 4G would mean the phone itself is having to process more data and faster which would also kill battery life.
Releasing a 4G phone that is a brick with a giant lithium ion battery...
