Not exactly a scientific nor technically accurate explanation, but here goes: let's say that Sprint owns radio spectrum in the 800-825 mhz portion as well as 850-900, and the feds own spectrum in the 825-850 part.

After the move is made, instead of the government using spectrum in between what Sprint has, they get the first band, and Sprint has the subsequent two.

Doing this accomplishes two things: First, it gets Nextel iDEN off of frequencies that overlap with emergency and first responder bands, and it gives Sprint an unbroken range of radio spectrum which should translate into better reception, less interference, and more reliable call handling.

I believe once they get it moved, the network and reception will be better.
