$670 million to rent it's own towers?

drake

I just saw this article from last month, I know that Verizon and AT&T go through TowerCo, but why? Could there be better perks now for roaming, or is this going to mess up everything?

Sprint announced the sale of nearly all its cellular towers to TowerCo for $670 million in cash. The deal includes approximately 3,300 CDMA and iDEN network towers. TowerCo will take over the running and maintenance of the towers, and Sprint will lease the use of the towers from TowerCo so it may continue to run its network. The sale frees up Sprint personnel from managing the towers, and gives Sprint a large amount of cash, both of which will help it focus on its core business of providing communications services.

I know, what i meant was they sold them for $670 million, and now are renting them back from the company. I talked to one of the tower reps, and they said they do this all the time due to depreciation of value of the towers, everyone does it.

It also has to deal with maintaining them.

Therefore, those factors come into play, and they need cash, it is easier to sell the tower assets and then lease them right back.

Yeah. It's like a big ol' payday advance loan. Quick cash now but the payback is hell. 🤣

"There are four publicly traded companies in the tower business: American Tower (AMT: Research, Estimates), Crown Castle International (CCI: Research, Estimates), SpectraSite (SSI: Research, Estimates) and SBA Communications (SBAC: Research, Estimates). These firms own and operate the towers and lease antenna space to big wireless carriers like Verizon Wireless, Cingular and AT&T Wireless so they can transmit cell phone signals across their networks."

Why is this still a story?

Well, we could talk about all of Sprint's new customers and the increase in profits and the wonderful customer service.... oh, wait....

Guess we'll have to stick with the towers... 🤣

I'm not an investor in the company therefore am not overly concerned about the current financial status of the company. Nevertheless, I am convinced that the company will turn its situation around although it won't be a quick process.

Also, I don't experience any issues so I don't utilize customer service. Granted, it is still pretty bad but I commend them on their efforts to improve it.

I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I say it gets pretty old listening to trollers beating the same subject to death. I'm quite aware of the current state of the company without having to see the always unoriginal "sink ship" along with all the other clever quips.

While I do respect your views/opinions it would be nice to come on here just ...

I understand what you are saying but the issues we are discussing are the same old issues. They recently lost more than 900k customers. They recently sold off their towers because they are hurting for cash. They recently announced the discontinuation of SERO, which was a supposedly a great tool for attracting new customers. Right now, those are the interesting things about Sprint.

They aren't really providing much in the way of "good' new for either investors or customers to discuss. I mean, how many threads can you really start and read about how great your coverage is? Everyone here using Sprint thinks they have the best coverage. So every thread should be "Wow, I have great coverage"...?

Most of the "trolls" here for a couple of r...

I hardly take your posts personally. If you perceive to have been burned by sprint, I presume you have left the company and pay another carrier for your wireless needs correct? If that's the case, why don't you go sing Verizons praise or T-Mobiles or whoever it may be with.

Also, I'd love to see the article that explicitly stated that Sprint sold off its towers because its hurting for cash. Again, I hardly take that as a personal slam but I think if you are going to post on here you should have some facts to back up your claim.

You are correct in stating that Sprints customer service is terrible and they were wrong in their thinking when they extended service to people with little credit worthiness but I think it's just pointless to ...

I don't find your posts disrespectful. However, there are many who are. It's not hard to find them if you look around. So most of those comments were not directed at you personally.

I do, however, take issue to your statement that it's my "perception" that Sprint burned me. That insinuates that they probably didn't but I just saw it that way. I suppose the other 1.09m that left last quarter was under the "perception" that Sprint was giving them subpar service.

I'd love to dig up the article in which Sprint publicly announced that they were selling of all their towers because they have lost the ability to make money and are pretty much broke, but I'm afraid that even Sprint isn't stupid enough to make such a public statement. It doesn...

Also, I think you're completely missing the point. The point I'm trying to make is that the Sprint subscribers and non-subscribers alike are probably looking for useful information. Not that your info isn't, it's just spewed out over and over and over again. You have fished the lake dry and made your point. However, you are completely free to make any statement you like so it looks as if I'll just have to learn to deal with it. 🙂

I'm not even remotely concerned with what customers are going where. Obviously you are and take a lot of pleasure from that which, frankly, is gross, pathetic, and frightening. I'm interested in the technology, how it can be applied to telecom and media, etc. If I want to find out about what Verizon and ATT is doing I'll go to their forum and ask. Do all of us a favor and be gone.

Did you hear all sprint 900k customers will probably come back, I bet you believe that one too. You might have taken over the number one fan boy spot, but give him time he will be here soon. but feel free to geek on what it might do 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Updated: added additional launch date projection

Sprint today confirmed that its WiMax plans are proceeding as scheduled. Sprint employees are currently testing networks in Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington, however they have extended their test radius to suburban areas. In a few months, Sprint will allow vendors and selected "friendly" users to test devices on the network. Sprint expects to commercially launch to the network in those three cities mid-second quarter - late April or May. At launch Sprint will offer card-based modems and laptops with WiMax built in, but other manufacturers like ...

Sprint will then roll out service in additional cities much slower than past network upgrades.

from Sprint

It's August and still not commercially launched in the three test cities stated. The "must slower" roll out is not exactly exciting either.

In comparison, WiMAX service is already provided by Clearwire to nearly 400,000 customers and Sprint’s Xohm service is currently in soft launch in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Chicago and is expected to launch later in 2008.

i found this more up to date info...

It's not that they did it as much as they WHY they did it. They did it because they are "cash poor". And it's probably something they should have done long before now if since it was obviously a good business move. Since they are trying to sell off other assets as well, like Nextel, one can't help but interpret this as another act of desperation on Sprint's part.

So while other carriers did this because it made good business sense, Sprint did it because they needed the fast cash. That's what makes it interesting to talk about.
