towers

I've been with Sprint for almost a year now and I keep getting asked "how do I update my phone for the towers in this area?"

I don't think there is a tower update function for Sprint, or CDMA in general. Every time i get this question I just go to the settings menu and do 'Update Phone S/W'.

Someone Tell me I'm wrong and there is a way to update the towers in an area so I don't feel like a goof telling people this anymore.

If I remember right though there was at one point in the past a tower update function under TDMA and AMPS service if there still isn't one for Nextel.

Only field techs can "update the towers". Enhance voice and data to Sprint's towers.

The Sprint customers may be inquiring about a prl or firmware update.

that is what they are asking for, but not the words they are using.

to do a prl or firmware update, Am I doing it right by going to the update phone software option in settings or is there a different method I should try?

If the account is in p2k you can click a button in RMS and it will flag the line for a PRL update. The next time that line calls *2 it updates itself. If you are not corporate or it is an Ensemble account, customer service has to flag the account for the update. Alternatively, almost all phones can have it updated at a repair location.

PRL= preferred roaming list. It tells the phone which roaming towers to use in what order and what permissions the phone has to use data/voice services on what roaming towers. The phone natively "sees" all Sprint towers already, so PRL won't do much of anything within Sprint service itself, mostly effecting what order to use roaming towers.

You can now? I'll have to check that again. Last time I tried it clicked it and didn't do anything. Maybe they've actually fixed something with their "enhancements."

Yeah I was wondering about that also. On my Veriozn phone (I have VZ and Sprint) you just dial *228 (and then press 2)to update the roaming list.

sprint is in sprint prl listed as first on it. However it doesn't do anything unless sprint say signs a new deal with verizon and they become number 2 instead of alltel. Or signs a evdo roaming deal with verizon. Other then that a prl update won't do much. Like when they signed a evdo deal with alltel that prl update did a good deal!

PRL update isn't going to fix this. Your phone doesn't contain a "list of towers" to update. Based off of a SID, the PRL list tells the phone in what order to use what towers (Sprint obviously being first). All Sprint towers share the same SID, old or new, your phone knows to use it.
