Verizon Vs. Sprint

wglover

Oct 11, 2004, 8:34 PM
Ok I in a dilema. I live in the Tristate area. In NJ. I dont do alot of traveling, once in awhile. I have verizon service which i love the coverage. but I was thinking about switching to Sprint mostly because of the fact that 90% percent of my friends have sprint and I could drastically cut my plan because it would be free to talk to them and alot of them are also getting the PTT service from Sprint. Now my question, is how good or bad is the Sprint Service in the NJ NY area. And why should I stay with with Verizon?

I believe that it would be beneficial for you to switch your service from verizon to sprint for the following reasons:
A.) Your friends have sprint. With the sprint pcs to pcs $5 dollar add on pack, all your calls are now free between you and your friends no matter what time of day or where you are.
B.) While yes, Verizon has the absolute BEST coverage area out of ANY cell phone carrier in the WORLD, they can and DO roam. (especially here in the mountains of TN) Verizon does NOT offer you roaming packages, while sprint does. What this means for you if you switch to sprint... You no longer have to worry about coverage because anywhere there is a tower in the united states, sprint picks it up and its free for you. (so long as all of your tot...

i agree with you on all but one point. verizon does not have the best network. sprint does! that is why so many other companies choose to use the sprint network! just ask Vergin Mobile, quest, cricket, liberty wireless and the future at&t! all have choosen to use sprints network? why? because it is the most extinsive pcs network in the us with the fewest droped calls! now where did i get that last part from? "the future att" what are you talking about? Cingular is merging with ATT which will make it one entity, ATT will no longer be a cell provider. Secondly I dont see how att would use Sprint's network anyway since they are two completely different technologies.
Third thing, Sprint's fair an flexible still still has overage charges, they are just forcing you to pay $2.50 of 100 minutes.
Fewest dropped calls? I had a 4900 when i was with sprint, that think was the strongest phone they had running. There were numerous occasion when i had full service that i had dropped calls.

you probubly do not keep very upto date on the wireless industry so it is understandable that you do not know that once cingular has cvompleatly aquired the current AT&T wireless AT&T will relaunch a wireless service that will use the sprint network as well as wifi.

as for you 4900 i have no idea what you are talking about with that. a number of things could have caused you 4900 problems like the basement you lived in.

but about the fair and flexable. you really should look at the new fair and flexable plan. there is not a plan 2000 mins or less out there that can touch it! not even cingular with it's role over! it is not overage! it is pay for what you use! and only pay for what you use! you never pay more then 5$ for 100 mins! with ...

Hey wglover all I have to say is that I have worked for both SprintPCS and Verizon Wireless and I have two comments about which one to go for.

1. If you like dropped calls then go with Sprint because you will have a lot of them and will not get any compensation.

2. If you like to talk to someone who is willing to assist you with a problem or actually be able to help you change your price plan without messing it all up then you should go with Verizon.

When I was with Sprint I was put under the assumption that all of their problems were the same with the wireless industry and after being with Verizon, and still currently, I would have to say that you should really stay. Not to mention if you try to port your number to sprint they w...

Back in the day JD Powers & associates had rated SprintPCS as the most extensive all digital network.

That has LONG changed. VZW is the largest wireless provider in the USA AS PER JD POWERS & ASSOCIATES. Comparing the coverage maps will prove VZW to be the largest even AFTER the Cing/ATTWS merger.

I have had in the past a sanyo 4900 and the 5200 series phones from SprintPCS. I have also had the samsung 8500 and the lg 5000 series phones. What always killed me is trying to use my phone in the area from the times of 2pm - 5pm. 9 times out of 10 I would get a 'We are sorry the network is too busy. please try your call later". My friends in sprintPCS still get this message today.

Put it this way. All the carriers are the same. Granted y...

After reading what everyone has to say about this company or that company a few things come to mind.
First off most of this information is biased, area specific, phone specific, and one sided. Almost to the point of a Ford Vs Chevy Argument or a “my team is better than yours”. Here is my attempt to set it strait

Coverage As far as coverage goes, where are you? If you live out with the cows in Scratch Ankle, AL Sprint is not a good choice, if you live in the inner city, which is better? Coverage wise either is comparable.

Off Peak Start time Nights at 7pm or 9pm. Better question how much do you talk between 7p and 9p? Alternatively, do you really use all of your daytime minutes anyways?

GWFOX what ever you are smokeing it aint leagel. first of all you can not go by vzw coverage. why? because on there map they do not distingish there network from roaming partners network. sprint is the only carrier that is actually honest enough to make the distinction n there coverage maps to show there actual network and other carriers networks. verizon's map, a lot of that ruel coverage, it really is altel covering that aria!

this is what you said
"Oh yeah BTW that $5 for 100 minutes? Meh that's about 20 cents per minute for overage. If you are on the PROPER rate plan then you will never have overage."

um i think you need to change the batteries in you calculator. $5 devided by 100 mins is $.05 a min you are off by $.15!!!

now what about this proper rate plan. by that you mean you will always be paying for more mins than you actually use regardless. WHY?! why do you force a customer to pay for 2000 mins when most months they only need 1100 but maybe 2 months out of the year they actually use the 2

TheVZWMan i am sure you can change your plan with verizon AT ANY TIME but see hear is the thing you have to be psychic you have to do it the month before your usage. you can not call in after you have already used too many or too few mins so once you have called you phone psychic on you mobile phone then you have to call into verizon and wait on hold then change you plan. DAM! that is a hassle! why can't the plan just change automatically to fit your need?! why can't the plan be fair and only charge you for what you use? Why can't a plan be flexible and automatically adjust to your calling?! wait it can! with sprints new fair and flexible!!!

forgive me i am excited because some one finally found a way to beat role over

Your not exactly correct with that Steve...There are multiple ways to keeop track of your minutes with VZW to where if you believe you are going to go over you can chagne it before you get to that point., or if you know you are going to need more minutes you can change it before you even use them... And I know about your Customer Care but in my call center there are hardly ever calls in que to where a cust has to wait more than 30 seconds for a rep. You call it hassle, we call it getting our customers involved in thier service. Cause when they call in to change their rate plan we give them a lot more info than what is going to be on there next bill, that way they know about their calling plans and features therefore less billing errors and l...

VZWMan is right about the coverage. A small part in some rural areas is helped by Alltel (such as south east Ohio) and most of the map they show with the red and pink is Verizons actual coverage. The major thing to look at is their "Enhanced Services" network which shows mostly what Verizons digital coverage is. I do wonder what they will do next year when the government shuts down analog and sprint has EV-DO deployed throughout their entire network and Verizon is still working on it in their test markets.

Test markets? You mean like the fourteen cities and numerous airports it's already available in (the largest EVDO coverage currently) and the fact it'll be available nationally on the entire native network by the end of next year (faster and wider than any other carrier?)

How about the fact that Sprint didn't even get on the boat for EVDO as it was working towards a separate 3g technology and had to play catch up when it realized how many customers it was going to lose to Verizon?

Mmmmmhmmmm.

😲 Seperate 3g technology? You must be referring to EVDV. No, It's not a "Separate" technology. It's the next evolutionary step above EVDO. 2g->1xrtt->EVDO->EVDV.

Sprint was initially going to launch EVDV (Thereby skipping the EVDO step). Verizon will eventually be moving to EVDV as well. The ONLY reason Sprint decided not to skip the EVDO step was due to a lack of EVDV equipment.

Sprint has had one of the HIGHEST dropped call rates industry-wise. They've reported quarters with almost 10% dropped call rate in some areas. The only time they've had the best network is when they sold VERIZON's service rebranded under their name. Now that they are entirely separate, Verizon is the clear choice.

Verizon also doesn't have a nasty habit of disconnecting your phone when you roam over 50% of the time.

They absolutely did.

In fact, ironically, the ONLY time Verizon has NOT won the JD Power award for network was in 2001 in the New York area when they sold rebranded Verizon Wireless network and service. Later they acquired a license and created their own native network.

That's pretty old news, you can even Google it.

Its a matter of phones, in my opinion. Even though Sprint is the ONLY all digital network, sometimes in rural areas the service is something to be desired. However, Sprint phones are much more supperior, having the best manufacturer, Sanyo, leading the way. Verizon relies too much on LG's, which stand for "Latest Garbage".

I have been a Sprint customer for a total of 4 years. In between I went with Verizon for a few months and it was a big mistake. 😢 My plan started at $59.99, by the time I added insurance, txt messaging, and did a few downloads my bill ended up being almost $100/mo. I called to find out what was going on and they had told me that within that time Verizon added a fee of 18% onto your total bill every month. They said it was a fee just for having Verizon. I was not notified of this change to my bill. Therefore after that I cancelled my service and went back to Sprint. I pay so much less with Sprint even if I go over my minutes. With the Vision Pack, downloads are included as well as unlimited Wireless Web that does not deduct from yo...

My service with Sprint is wonderful. I always have service, except inside buildings with a lot of electronics i.e. warehouses. When I was a Verizon customer, I would lose service driving in certain areas. Where as with sprint it would either go into roaming or be in normal service. I say go with Sprint, it's better service for a lower price! 😉

I don't know how the coverage is with either company but in my opinion your best bet would be to ask your friends. My main reason for saying this is because they probably frequent the same places you do. Another reason is you probably won't get an unbiased opinion because too many reps post to these forums and will probably end up in a dispute about who has the best coverage.
