Upgrading - am I getting the best price?

I've been a T-Mobile customer for 3 years now, having first joined in 2002 with Voicestream. I've been using a Motorola P280 the entire time, but the time has come to upgrade.

I called yesterday to obtain upgrade prices on two phones - the V330 and RAZR. The P280, at the time I purchased it, was top of the line, so I wanted to replace it with one of the current (ok, for RAZR, almost current) top phones. I was shocked at the upgrade price - $219 for the V330, $279 for the RAZR, plus a 1 year contract! I was uneligible for any rebates because I am a current customer.

Am I not speaking with the right customer service person? The "retail" price of those phones is listed as $199 and $249, respectively, on the T-Mobile web site. I would have...

Good morning,
please keep in mind there are two factors in receiving the max discount when it comes to upgrading. How long have you been on a rate plan and when did you last upgrade. it is possible the rep you spoke with didn't do enough research into your account to see if you had the proper tenure to offered you the same as new customer pricing.
If that is the case and the rep fumbled the ball, I offer you my apologies.

Wishing you well,
Snow.

What's interesting is that in Europe like the Netherlands for instance many of the premium phones can be had by new customers such as the Mot V3 or the Nokia 6230i for free with a two year commitment and that's on all carriers.

I know there are changing comming when it comes to the 1 and 2 year commitments and equipment pricing, but what are going to be for sure I don't know. I am not that strong in what overseas has to offer for new or same as new customers but I am always will to learn. Lord know I am not the end all be all of customer care. ~laughs~

Wishing you well,

It generally depends on your rate plan...
Current customers can receive rebates but must be on a 39.99 plan or higher to receive them.

Though, even without rebates this seems a little high. Currently and my store (independent), the RAZR would be $249.99 with a $50 rebate (if your on a 39.99 or higher). The V330 would be 199.99 with a $50 rebate (if your on a 39.99 or higher).

I'd say check some dealers in your area, you may find a better price, you may not.

If you can't find a solid deal, 299.99 for a RAZR no contract is not a bad price.

If you have been on a single line plan $39.99 or higher or a family plan $69.99 or higher for at least eleven complete months, then you are definitely eligible for the biggest discount. The RAZR would be $199 after $50 rebate, and the V330 would be $149 after $50 rebate also. Being a current customer has nothing to do with being eligible for rebates. You are just only eligible for them once a year. Our computer systems do get confused often about people's upgrade eligibility, so call back and explain the situation and ask them to look into it a little more carefully.

Ah - so perhaps that's the source of my problem. While I've been a customer for three years, perhaps I'm considered only a mediocre customer because I've been on a $29.99 rate plan the bulk of the time. This at least clears up things a bit.

I'll try my luck with a second customer rep and see how it goes. Thankfully, T-Mobile reps are pretty pleasant on the whole so it's not too much of a chore to call back again.

Starting around September 11th this year, they ARE going to roll out a new program where if you agree to a *2* year contract the discount would be much greater-- even if the cust has been on a 19.99 plan the whole time (but don't quote me on the 19.99 though lol )
The discount-- I don't know what or how deep it would be yet.

What's the catch?

Well for one, this is the beginning of tmobile ever offering 2 year contracts, and if you want to upgrade your phone again and get a full discount again you need to wait 22 months

Hope this helps y'all.
