How is T-Mobile reception in the WDC/Baltimore area? I'm thinking about switching from Verizon, but I'm concerned about the service. I'm interested in the Moto A630 and OF COURSE Verizon doesn't have it!

I was in the heart of DC in August 2004, and my phone worked great!

Are you concerned about a particular area of DC/MD/VA? I live in NVA and commute to DC, and I have been more than satisfied with the coverage (I had ATT a couple years back and it was horrible). I work with people that use other carriers and I find we all get comparable coverage. Verizon users typically have a slight edge in the elevators for some reason, but around town and in the metro area I'm usually 3 bars or better on my V300. There are some small odd areas (i.e. George Washington Pkwy) where I'll lose a signal for a brief period but it isn't too bothersome. Let me know if you have questions.

I believe that the reason Verizon has an edge in the elevators has something to do with them having a lower frequency or something that penetrates infrastructure better. That is one of the things that Cingulars 850 mhz frequency is supposed to be good at as well. Unfortunately T-Mobile doesn't have the 850Mhz.

You're right. Fortunately, I don't spend much time in the elevators; however, as you mentioned, as soon as I take two steps down into the metro, I lose everything. That can be very frustrating but hasn't annoyed me too much since I very rarely use the metro. If they could only find a way...

I believe Verizon has an exclusive contract to offer service in the metro tunnels.

I used to live in the DC/Baltimore area (Rockville, but I spent a lot of times in both cities) 2 years ago and I still visit often. I have a Verizon account and a T-Mobile account and I can tell ya honestly, that while T-Mob isn't that bad in DC or Baltimore it isn't quite as good. I have found that T-Mob works better in certain parts of the suburbs especially north of Rockville. However, in the cities Verizon is better hands down. I believe Verizon's frequency has better building penetration which comes in handy in cities. But the kicker, to me, is that my Verizon phone works on the metro. I get a signal in almost 100% of the tunnels whereas my T-Mob is a useless brick down there. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for all of the very useful comments. From what I'm reading, I guess I'd better stay with Verizon. I really do have great phone service with them. The phones just suck. I was really liking that Motorola A630 (I have the Treo now and that keyboard must have been made for children's hands!!).
T-mobile has some great phones!

I guess there is no need to have a snazzy phone that doesn't work everywhere you need it to work.

Thanks again for your help.

I forgot to mention...I'm pretty sure TMo has a 14 day trial period. That's what I did before I switched from ATT. You can sign up and check it out yourself; if it doesn't work for you, just return the phone and cancel the plan.

Thanks everyone for all of the useful replies. I guess I'd better stay with Verizon then. I have to say, I do get very good reception with them. Their phones just aren't all that great. I was really liking that Motorola A630 (I'm trying out the Treo 600 now and the keyboard is just sooo tiny!!).

Thanks again.
