If you don't want to upgrade the phone or pay the upgrade fee you'll have to buy the phone at retail. You might get a discount off the retail since it's through a business (I'm assuming on this one since you said Premiere site) but I'm not sure if they offer that online. You may have to go into a corporate store.

I can understand the 1913 lady's point...I am buying the phone and I am an existing customer, so I still get hit with a $18 fee? Do they want to sit on inventory or move it? Either way is an opportunity cost to them, not me.
Is this a shipping charge? or just for the sake of them slapping it in a box and sticking a stamp on the side?
Simple economics or finance means make it as simple for existing customers to get your product as possible and they will buy.
Not jumping on you, ralph on me, just trying to justify the $18 to myself...

I don't take anything personally, so no worries. As for what "Cingular" justifies it with, I have no clue. At the store level I think of it as a paperwork fee. Sure, it could be worked into the price of the phone, but then new activations and upgrades would be at different prices and that confuses things more.

At the store level, we've gotta hang onto a copy of every scrap of paper you sign for seven years in case the IRS puts a bug up our butt. Those storage costs aren't free.

It's not a storage nore a shipping cost, it's simply a "re-activation" fee, same as when you first activated, consider like a paper processing fee like ralph said, there's no way around those kinds of fee's, no matter what company, it's not just cingular. If you want to upgrade I would go to a store for a better variety on price or to purchase full retail. If you don't want to re-new simply go to a store and pay retail price. Phones can't be purchase at full retail online.

In the store the 6102i is 99 - 50 instant - 20 with purchased features 29.99. I dont want the features. The retail price is around 230. The same phone is 29.99 on our site but with the upgrade fees.
Are the same fees applied if you just walk in?

NOOOO, as I read your response I said " did i put 1913 in my tagname?" and I said no, then I read on bewildered and saw that you knew my gender as well. Then "I was wondering how you knew" then I looked at your tagname. Not upset..much love :-)

Usually you'd have to go to a corporate owned store to get a business discount off the retail price of a phone, however since 15% isn't that much you could probably get that same discount at a premiere agent too. I've seen customers with a 45% off retail before, and those can definitely only be serviced by corporate.

Shouldn't take but a few days. So you're going to do the upgrade instead of a retail purchase?

Well as far as I can tell that would be the cheapest route. Corporte store - retail = 230

agent store - 49.99
online - 29.99

And I guess 18.00 upgrade fee on each. Do you have a suggestion.... I just want a phone without all the fees...Ihave been a customer since 94..Isnt there some sort of customer loyalty?

Sometimes they'll send out offers directly to customers, but as far as regular pricing goes it's the same for everyone. If they had guidelines drawn up for who gets what kind of discount for such and such, it would really bog down things on the retail end so they leave that up to direct fulfillment.

If you want the phone as cheaply as possible, do the upgrade. If you have a $9.99 data feature already on your account or were going to add one, you'll get the phone for the same price in store as you would online. That's not always the case, but in this situation it is. You'll have the $18 upgrade fee, but that's still cheaper than the retail price without the upgrade fee.
