AT&T threatens to disconnect subscribers who criticize the company
By Ken Fisher | Published: September 30, 2007 - 11:00PM CT

AT&T has rolled out new Terms of Service for its DSL service that leave plenty of room for interpretation. From our reading of it, in concert with several others, what we see is a ToS that attempts to give AT&T the right to disconnect its own customers who criticize the company on blogs or in other online settings.

In section 5 of its legal ToS, AT&T stipulates the following:

AT&T may immediately terminate or suspend all or a portion of your Service, any Member ID, electronic mail address, IP address, Universal Resource Locator or domain name used by you, without notice, f

Hey Nextel, there's no contract on DSL. Anyone can leave anytime they want to with absolutely zero penalty.

I'd laugh to see someone suspended or banned or canceled for doing that. It's hilarious. If someone really hates their att service that bad, well the att will save them a phone call and cancel it for them so they can go with a provider they like. Awesome!

ATT actually told me that I did have a contract on my DSL. That I couldn't cancel without a termination penalty or else I had to return my modem (which I bought!).

We have it all straightened out now, but there for a while they were telling lots of customers in this area that they couldn't cancel service without penalty.

Yeah.

I hope you realize half of the things I say, I only say because I'm bored and wanna see how people react to it.

That is quite a liberty to cancel someone for what they say. If it was a government agency trying to do so, it would be unconstitutional. Depending on how you interpret it, this may very well be too.

As far as a denial of service goes though, who cares? There are other competitors to go with and I don't really consider the internet a necessity.

Woops. I thought it was for the wireless division not wire line. I knew that DSL does not have any contracts, cept for Verizon’s.

Yea, it is funny. Good. It is an easier way to go to Verizon’s FIOS. We should see a lot more additions for Verizon.

Yeah, I'd rather have my yard torn up for a fiber line to run into my home than have free installion and a zero month term from att Uverse too.

Good, I honestly didn't know. Running fiber into apartments sounds pretty tricky though.

No problem. It is tricky but think of the great opportunity they will have. Businesses can have it done too. Moreover, the costs will also go down so that will help Verizon.

Yes they can, but more importantly is that we have already paid for it with our tax dollars.

Ouch indeedy. What'd they name that tax? I know the link says they set up the initiative, but it didn't name the tax.

Well I think you are taking certain liberties on your interpretation,

but...

if you talked bad about a company that much, wouldn't you have already left or on the verge of leaving, but if your interpretation is correct, and I want to leave, I should just talk bad about ATT and they will lay down the path for me

you really like to post things that aren't relevant to the wireless portion of this company. but yes, they will term your services. and you said 'translation' which might mean one thing to you, but what they are referencing is if you blatantly degrade their name, write lies about them ect say they are doing things they aren't (slander)... get real man, stay out of here with your propaganda crap.

the nsa thing doesn't bother me and no one really cares... just like your credit card company and bank tracks how you spend your money, who cares who goes through your phone calls... if you are that worried about it, move to china.

I doubt it, but you raise a valid point.

What about businesses or people whose job it is to critically review and evaluate products and services of at&t?

I would hope regardless of the company's name that most all people can see the petty attempt to stifle the dissemination of information regarding poor quality of services, as opposed to actually improving the quality of those services.
