Saygus Vphone

Azeron

Whatever happened to the Saygus Vphone? The realization that I am stuck with Verizon and my trusty LG-VX8100 as AT&T is not allowing new Unlimited Data plans for smartphones. Yep. I waited too long.

I'm going to have to go with Epik on this one. I think that their advertising of all these new features and talking for verizon (yes, we'll be released on their network soon) made verizon try and nix the deal.

one thing you shouldn't do when trying to get a favor from a boss is make fun of his small d***.

I'm sorry it seems to be vaporware man.. the phone did look pretty amazing.

Yes. If they are looking for Verizon to subsidize the thing then I agree. However, Verizon should not stand in the way of them offering the device with no VZW subsidy. That is the whole point of this farce of a policy.

The initiative was actually for non-phones primarily. Things like ebook readers, or EMT devices, etc. to use the network without having to set up a specific verizon plan.

The phone portion of it was just a secondary reason, and one they never seemed too thrilled about.

What gets me is why didn't sangus try working with Sprint or a smaller MVNO to get the device out there, at least to start?

I don't know what to tell you concerning the open development initiative. Back when it was first announced in 2007, it seemed to be for a little bit of everything: phones, telemetry devices, packet sending connections, industrial applications, and more. Everyone focused on the phone aspect of the idea. Many assumed phones would be the primary aspect of open development - a valid assumption, considering we're talking about a PHONE company.

Not even a year later, the emphasis was on industrial and commercial applications, and not so much on phones themselves. The development didn't really change, just the talking points. But in that adjustment, everything appeared to shift, when I don't believe anything ever shifted.

In my personal,...

I hate to say it, but maybe a bit of strong arming from the FCC will open up this Open Development to handsets. I despise government interference normally, but we all know that Verizon floated this Open Development garbage out there to show the Feds that they were opening their network up. Not for phones? Then why the PR? Mind games... Yeah, I'd like to see the hammer come down on them. Wishful thinking I'm sure...

I'm sure that if the FCC kicked a little butt Verizon would stall by pointing toward LTE and the potential for wider product availability... "the problem will fix itself, through the market."

Yeah.

If you've got a demo model, PhoneCan.com would love a few minutes to take a look at it. We have someone in your area. Email me at epik at phonecan dot com, or visit the site.

I sent an email a couple weeks ago requesting some one-on-one time.

PhoneCan just published an article about the Saygus VPhone.

http://www.phonecan.com/blog1.php/exclusive-hunting- ... »

It is PhoneCan's assertion that the buzz around the phone a year ago was more about attracting investors than producing the phone, and as such, the VPhone was doomed from the start.

It's a long article, and I'm not comfortable in reproducing it here, so my apologies to those who cannot immediately click on the link to read it.

I've been here since April 2004 and you've been here since March 2006 and our paths have never crossed? I worked in wireless from 1999 to 2009...two for Alltel, one for AT&T and seven for VZW. I post in this forum mainly because it feels like home after so many years.

I'm sure Azeron will eventually give you his first-hand account.

As I understand it, he had a Blackberry, but the monthly cost was getting to him. He reactivated the 8100 last year to save money and wait until he can get something new that didn't require a data plan. Then, January 18 came along, and the 8100 became something of a principal in the face of required data plans. The phones he might have considered last year now require a data plan he doesn't want, so the 8100 stays.

At least, that's how I understand it.

Azeron and I don't always agree on things, but that doesn't mean I don't disagree with him, nor does it mean I'm going to see someone criticize him for carrying the 8100 without saying something.

I'm sure Azeron wi...

Plat, it's a really, really long story. Yeah, I'm using an LG-VX8100 for my voice phone and still carrying my BB8330 around as a paper weight/organizer/mp3 player/porn ahem video player. I have a XV6900 which I use as a tethered device mainly. I could probably upgrade it to the Touch Pro 2 and be happy with it. I noticed that it is $79.99 at vzw.com...but I digress. A few weeks ago I was ready to pull the trigger on the iphone and I posted in the AT&T forum the news and was subsequently blasted because I have always poked fun at their network. Of course, they went and changed their smartphone data plan so it became a moot point. Bottom line...I STILL have three lines with VZW and they are pocketing two hundred bones a month from me. ...

I tried my best. Some of my posting lately is done on my phone, so I can't post my usual novella-length responses. Still, I wasn't about to let him have his jollies with your situation without saying something.

I forgot about the 6900.

Man, those links bring back memories. It was so hard to give up my Blackberry. Between canceling my fourth line and downgrading my Berry to the 8100 I knocked about sixty bucks off my monthly bill. If I cancel the 8100 and pay my ETF I could use the XV6900 for voice and data, but I would only be saving about twelve or thirteen bucks per month. Do you think it would be worth it?

This is the kind of situation where I've sold quite a few Palm Pres (and you know how I feel about Palms).

There's nothing wrong with the phone, in my opinion, just the manufacturer. But when you can get voice, usable web on your phone, and well designed hotspot tether all for your voice plan plus $30, that's hard to beat. You wouldn't even need the third line (or others potentially may not need a third line aircard).

Are you paying the $30 on the 6900 (on top of the $9.99 famshare line)?

Aside from that, I had the 6900, and while I was very critical of the phone at the time, until I had the Incredible in my hands I felt it was the best HTC phone I'd used of a half dozen or more HTC phones these past several years. The biggest is...

Yes. $9.99 Fam Share
$30 Unlimited Data
$15 Mobile Broadband Connect (No 5GB cap)

This line is the one costing me money, but until Clear gets ubiquitous coverage I have to keep this line.

No. I use 9 GBs every month on my XV6900 (thank goodness for grandfathered features eh?) Yeah, laugh away. I had a Blackberry for my voice line, but those three hundred dollar per month phone bills were kicking my arse, so I downgraded my device to the XV-8100. Which is a great phone. Sure I would like the 8300 but it is in two pieces now. Every time I bid on one on Ebay the price gets driven up into the stratosphere so...it's not like I would subscribe to VZNavigator anyway and that, micro SD card and stereo bluetooth are really the only upgrades from the 8100 to the 8300.

I always liked how the 8300 was just a hair thinner than that brick-era 8100.

I have an 8300 with a cracked outside screen sitting around the house. Maybe I should see if I have another that I can use for parts to fix it...

Pretty much what was inferred in the article. At this point, who cares if the phone comes out because it will be archaic by Q1 2011 standards, especially with whatever Verizon has to say about LTE phones at the end of the week.
