Data Plans
I read somewhere that some of the Verizon smartphones will require data plans, like the Blackberries - is this true? If so, how much will they cost? I've never had a smartphone but am considering the Blackberry Curve. I would like to be able to read email and surf the web, but the $30/month requirement seems a little high - my husband currently has the Voyager and has a $15/month data plan. But if the newer smartphones will require expensive data plans like Blackberries, I guess it won't matter...

You have to purchase the $30 data plan to run any smartphone on the Verizon Network.

this is true, but there are some workarounds. I believe this rule started in mid november. So any phone released before then is eligible to either use the 10mb (24.99) data plan or not have a data plan.
Blackberries will however require atleast the 10mb data plan, unless you get the storm which came out after the rule change--so it needs the $30 dollar package.
Many of the older smartphones do not require a data plan due to their release date....hope this helps.

The internet you can get on the voyager is still technically considered "mobile web" and because of this uses less data than a blackberry would.
Blackberries have their own data servers and support push, or "instant" email, which is why their packages are more expensive. The devices themselves are a lot more advanced than even a high end "dumbphone" like the voyager.
