U.S. Cellular Coverage Expansion

I've had my U.S. Cellular phone a few months now, and noticed obviously they have little coverage across the Minnesota boarder from where I live in Northern Iowa (Only in the Rochester, Austin, Albert Lea and eastern sections of the I90 areas). Anyone know if they plan on expanding coverage in Minnesota? Also they have service and offer plans right up to the St. Louis suburbs. My hope is with me going down there to visit family a few times a year that eventually they will cover the STL area. Maybe there is a chance of them expanding there with them going into Chicago and Oklahoma City recently? I'm curious if the company has any expansion plans in the Local calling area in the mid-west, or really anywhere in general. Thanks! 🙂

You don't just "expand" to neighboring territories. Wireless carriers must be licensed for each specific cellular or PCS area they serve, and there probably are no available licenses in the areas you asked about. In most areas, all available cellular and PCS bands are already owned, so one would have to become available and the price would have to be "right" for US Cellular to make a purchase of a license.

I am sure they would like to expand their existing territories into adjacent areas, but it isn't that easy (not like if you are selling toasters or some retail product).

Actually, we already have a network up and running in St. Louis, but it won't be until later this year that it is actually included in our local home calling area. As for Minnesota, USCC just successfully bid on some spectrum there. However, it's not final, and even if it gets to that point it'll probably be two years before it's part of our calling area. We only have the spectrum, not any towers or anything

Awsome! My relatives live in the Collinsville, IL. area, a suburb of STL about 20 miles east of STL. That would be awsome to not be in roaming eventually! Hopefully that's close enough to STL.
