When apple approached to them first vzw just said "get the heck out of here if u want so much control over the phone".

Now they want it huh.

I believe they have always wanted the phone and they still want to have majority control over the thing!

Straight from the CEO's mouth. That should be concrete enough.

Gosh, if distribution is that important to Apple why don't they just sell the damn iphone through their own stores/website.

There were more written after the success of the iPhone as well showing what a bad move it was. I believe there was an interview with VZW CEO that downplayed the fact that they passed up the iPhone even though it appeared to be a blockbuster product.

"appeared to be a blockbuster product?"

-no prototype shown to them
-smartphone device marketed to non-smartphone users (when most people thought data on phones was stupid)
-Full retail price on a device marketed to consumers expecting something for free
-no insurance or in store warranty support offered
-apple, a company with no history of phones, (they tried an itunes phone on sprint.. didnt work) wanting a better deal than most companies gave their long time partners.

Yes, the iphone was a huge sucess, but there was nothing until the press worked it up into a frenzy that led a company to believe it would be a huge hit.

Little bit of both. I think it was in the early conceptual stages that they were deciding between Verizon and AT&T and talked to both. There's no evidence Apple even built a prototype or hardware for VZW's network, nor is there any evidence Apple had any negotiations with VZW.

(Also keep in mind this is one of the blabbiest companies in this sector- they practically destroyed Sprint's launch of the Palm Pre by announcing they would get it. )

I think they always wanted it. But they also want a consistent customer experience: the same phones in all retail locations, one number to dial for tech support, etc. This doesn't mean that VZW has changed their expectations either.

As an indirect retailer, I'd just as soon have VZW pass on the iphone if I can't sell it in my store.

I think that's so, so weird, why should it matter to anybody who sells the Iphone, more distribution means more sales, it's that simple.

If and when Verizon gets the iPhone, it won't be relevant anyway. The Android market is expanding so rapidly that Apple has nowhere to go but down. Per PhoneArena's comments re HTC: "Everywhere you look, HTC's name is always somewhere in the news as they continue to drive the stake into the heart of the smartphone market." "...the mounting competition may not phase them as they continue to lead the group with their wide range of innovative products"

Amen to that! I bet by the time Apple releases their iPhone 4.0 OS software and all the bugs and kinks are worked out, Google will release their next version of the Android OS and it will work reliably.
