lol 3g is CDMA guys, AT&t and Tmobile use WCDMA and there is very little difference between WCDMA and the EVDO IS-95 use by Verizon and Sprint. You are both comparing the tech used to make phone calls GSM vs CDMA 1x (sometimes called IS-95) The reason why you see such a big difference in coverage is its was much easier for IS-95 carriers to upgrade their existing voice network to add data than is for GSM carriers to install a whole new WCDMA network

so on Verizons network the same channel on a tower can be a voice or data call, with AT&T or Tmobile they have separate towers for 3g and GSM voice

Qualcomm sued Ericsson back in 1999 over the fact that Ericsson was developing WCDMA (of witch Qualcomm held patents and Ericsson was trying t...

Man, just use the PhoneScoop glossary before you post. You sound like you are high.

IS-95
IS-95 is the technical standard for a digital wireless technology commonly referred to as simply "CDMA".

IS-95 is the 2G (second generation) version of CDMA. IS-95 has generally been superceded by the newer CDMA2000 (CDMA 1x) family of technologies.

let us please not forget that the transmission range of GSM and CDMA are not the same. The propigation properties very greatly as well.
CDMA transmits much farther, and has better elimination algorithms for bounce-back and multi-cast splitting that will allow the services to still work even in a diffinatively noisy enviroment. (noisy related to Signal to Noise Ratio) CDMA is less effected by Dirty signals.

also the cdg says

The CDMA air interface is used in both 2G and 3G networks. 2G CDMA standards are branded cdmaOne┞¢ and include IS-95A and IS-95B. CDMA is the foundation for 3G services: the two dominant IMT-2000 standards, CDMA2000® and WCDMA, are based on CDMA

so to try to set straight what I was trying to say

is-95 = 2g tech
GSM = 2g tech
1x evdo = 3g tech
WCDMA = 3g tech (what the gsm guys use for 3g)

you are correct most people refer to the network as IS-95 or CDMA2000 but they are both names for the 2g or voice network

No. IS95 is NOT CDMA 2000. It is CDMA (2G). CDMA2000 or 1x is 3G (barely) They are NOT the same. Just look at the Glossary here.

the info on phone scoop contradicts itself it goes on to say cdma2000 is 3g even the 1x, I guess if that's the way they want to define it that was not my point my point is that all 3g technologies are 3g in the USA at least

see the CDG
