You can seach 'Sholes' in Market to bring up Sholesmod to load some 2.1 features on your Droid and Root it. Great part for me is removing the "Car Mode". I use the Droid car holder and actually for me, hated having to back out of the Car mode. So now it just chills when I pop it in that.

The Wireless Tethering is fantastic also. It makes my phone like a portable WIFI. I turn it on and then have my labtop search for wireless...voila!

He has the Droid Eris, so Sholes will not work for him.

I would google Eris Root and read up on it. Since it is running it's own UI, it has a different rooting process.

One of the downsides of the Eris is that the development community for it it's nearly as large as it is for phones like the MotoDroid/g1/NexusOne.

You'll most likely find some decent information on rooting if you search for it, but I wouldn't expect too much in the way of custom roms compared to the other devices.

Most of these changes are free, and take quite a bit to do for coders, so they're only done in spare time on their own devices.
