Discuss Different Technologies

That was a great article on the basics but how about a few that concentrate on the different technologies, maybe go in-depth into GSM or iDen and CDMA, explain their advantages, disadvantages, and their future paths. Will the technologies be obsolete in the near future or will they be around in one form or another in 20 years? Again, thanks for the article.

although protocols were not on our list of future primers, we will consider it. it will be tough to do without fanning the flame wars. we see enough gsm vs cdma animosity on phonescoop as it is.

we also considered adding further depth to how each technology works as well as their timelines to this piece but decided that it was too much information for an entry-level primer and beyond the next one or two revisions (which we mentioned), no one's *really* all that sure about the roadmaps for these two technologies or if carriers will even stick with them.

that's not to say we can't do a primer on this, just that it may not be as clear cut as you'd like to think. of course, that may be the BEST reason why there should be a primer on it.

First off, great article. I found it really informative!

I'd like to see some info in a primer not necessarily about GSM vs. CDMA, but the differences of how the future 3G protocols are going to affect voice calls.

For instance, I know that EV-DO is for data only, and 1x is still going to be used for voice, correct? But WCDMA (or HSDPA) is going to be used for voice and data transmission, is that right?

Maybe some efficiency information with the spectrum info that is coming up. For instance, if 1x supports 12-20 calls per channel and GSM supports 8, will HSDPA support 40 but have data in the mix as well? I don't understand how it will be "rationed out."

Awesome info, again. Sorry if my question is confusing.. 🙂

i'm struck, but i guess i shouldn't be surprised, that clarifying what protocols and their future revisions offer is at the forefront of interest so far.

What do all the different types of data protocols calculate to. What sort of speeds am i looking at such as: EDGE, EV-DO, EV-DO R, UMTS, WCDMA, HSDPA, UTRAN LTE, and HSUPA. Also, who will be providing which protocols? And do those speeds translate into Cellular PC Cards?
