Stop playing catch up

Honestly, if I were a Palm user, I wouldn't exactly want my operating system to always play catch up with some program that doesn't want my phone. I feel like these phones need to stop trying to be the next iPhone and just be whatever they are. But it's stuff like this that makes me, as a consumer, think that Palm is just trying to make another iPhone. Blackberry has their own Media Center. Palm should develop their own as well...I mean, the webOS looks good. Make a computer program that looks and works just as good.

I say this to people all the time...if all these phones are trying to be iPhones...why not just get the original and stop playing catch up. As for the manufacturers, stop trying to be the iPhone and make your own identity.

The thing is, iTunes is very widely used. So rather than develop a whole new media manager or license one out (RIM uses Roxio, which isn't very good), they are simply using an existing one. It makes more sence and quite frankly should make most people happy. i don't want to have a new media manager for every device. If everything works in iTunes, great.

Also, the iPhone is still AT&T exclusive with a a pretty steep plan rate. Not everyone is willing to switch just so they can pay an even higher rate.

Palm is simply trying to compete and so far they are coming the closest. Now if only the build quality were higher...

I understand completely...but it is less about that and more about not trying to be an iPhone copy-cat. If I am a manufacturer trying to compete with the iPhone, the last thing I want to seem like is a poor man's iPhone. When I used to work for Sprint people would come in and look at the Instinct and say, "Is this your version of the iPhone?" If I were a consumer, I wouldn't want someone's version of a product, I'd get the original if it came to that. Palm needs to market their phone not as the iPhone killer or something better than the iPhone. Take the iPhone out of the equation, even if people think of the phone in comparison. Make it about the Palm Pre and say "iPhone...what?"

I think unlike other attempts we've seen to mimic the iPhone, Palm brings some new things to the table that are quite innovative.

But the hardware is miserable, and this cat and mouse iTunes thing makes Palm look even closer to deaths door

Palm pre also has amazon, which has a very large selection of music. Not just itunes. From the reviews and videos ive seen the palm pre beats the iphone in alot of areas. Also with the users who have switched to the palm from the iphone are very pleased. I mean palm doesnt compare itself to the iphone, its the consumers who are making the comparison. So why not have both amazon and itunes? People who have the palm pre who once had the sync ability with itunes and that ability suddently is gone are going to be upset, so just please the consumer and keep it compatible. Makes since to me.

Right now, as I type this, there's a Sprint ad comparing the pre to the iPhone....

The ability to sync with my iTunes library is desirable, however, Palm is using iTunes itself to sync- it has no media management software of its own.

Ideally yes, that's good for the consumer, but they're essentially leaching off of Apple's software to do so instead of writing their own legitimate software to synchronize iTunes libraries.

you don't have to specifically sync it up with itunes you can sync it up with anything that is compatible. It is a mass storage device. You probably don't have the phone, so try not to talk about what you don't know. thanks for posting ridiculous comments

What does being a "mass storage device" have to do with syncing? All smartphones are "mass storage devices". It has little to do with programs built to "sync" your music, contacts, and appointments. 🤣

a lot of people have problems(bias) with plastics...they think plastics make a phone feel cheap...(even Eric feels this way) so thats why they like saying that the build quality is poor, which of course is not always the same...

add into that..they hate phones in plastic casing but when u give them a phone with metal casing...they'll complain about the weight and thickness of the phone. 😳 🙄

Not just plastics that are the concern with the Pre. There are build quality problems that people are complaining about:

"Also, the iPhone is still AT&T exclusive with a a pretty steep plan rate. Not everyone is willing to switch just so they can pay an even higher rate."

This is true, and I hear that over and over and over and over and over. Funny, its the same price point as a Blackberry or a PDA phone like the Fuze. BTW, pricing from VZW for similar services is almost the same. And I don't hear the complaints about that.
