Would be nice if RIM came out with more than 1 3G phone for ATT. Skyfire is much better with 3G.

definitely a misconception here..

RIM is not responsible for the lack of 3g phones on ATT's network. As a matter of fact, I bet you they're pushing ATT to make a decision just like that.

if ATT would get their asses out of low-gear and decide to requisition more 3g blackberries, it would be better.

but FYI, for a better choice, switch to verizon. ALL of their blackberries since the pearl have been 3g.

lol stupid advertising!

... you obviously missed how I changed the quote... ATT should be requesting higher end devices.. I think they still have their love affair with the iphone though, don't want to spread marketing so thin.

But look at all the other GSM devices RIM has. Its not just ATT, its every carrier world wide. If i remember correctly, RIM didn't even want a 3g (UMTS) device, they were pushed by AT&T (and probably others) to do it.

Back when RIM was stuck in it's business mind set, 3g wasn't needed. Email was small, and the compression on their end kicked enough ass that EDGE was fine.

As far as high end goes, the 8900 is pretty up there, except for the lack of 3g. How many other phones have that high res display, wifi, gps, and a decent camera?

So how then is verizon able to push that all their blackberries come with 3g?

Verizon is bigger than ATT, but it's not bigger than the sum of GSM carriers.

who knows? maybe it's because they require a data plan on them (I have no idea if this is the case, just saying) Here's a question for ATT users.. if they came out with more 3g blackberries, but as a requirement you HAD to keep the data plan on them for the phone to work, how well do you think the phone would sell?

Maybe 1xRTT (or whatever) sucked for data speeds. Either way, EVDO can only handle data and not voice at the same time, so it might be easier to implement since you have different antennas for differnt things. With everyone else, the voice and the data have to work flawlessly. I really have no clue, but considering all the initial problems with the Bold (the reason why AT&T took so long to release it), it makes sense to me. It might have been on Boy Genius Report about RIM complaining about AT&T.

who knows? maybe it

1x RTT wasn't terrible for data. I mean, it's not the best, but if the towers are newer, you can get decent speeds on it.

With verizon, the email and web is $29.99. That is $720 over the course of the contract, and this is shared with Blackberry.

with ATT, it is what? lets say five months you have to wait to get the rebate. That is $150 or so more money the company gets. (I don't think it would take 5 months, but I'm not sure)

So that is $570 more the company would have to work with with a required data plan. That's why I said it could be that.

Ideally, I would love to see a pda phone that didn't have the smartphone features (no internet/wifi/push email) but running all the pda abilities.. like WM Basic or something, a...

Same price for Email and data on AT&T ($30 for personal, or $45 if its an Enterprise server [they're actually going to discount Enterprise in some cases]). So it would be the same amount (I'm sure part goes to BlackBerry, not sure how much of it though).

Rebates only take 1 or 2 months to get, some people realize that it's cheaper in the long run to get the phone without data.

But what's the point? Most of the people I see without data plans on one of these phones don't even use any of the PDA like features. The whole idea behind Smartphones was to combine a PDA, they just realized they could force the internet on later on in the game.

If you want PDA like features, look at some of Nokia's lesser known S60 models (not going to hap...

Great PDA functions with no data on a phone? Palm Centro. Great little phone, even without a data plan. But a Text plan SHOULD be required.

Reportedly AT&T will bring four new Blackberries: Magnum, Onyx, Gemini and Pearl 3G. I am very interested in the Magnum as it is reportedly going to include Touchscreen and Qwerty keyboard. From the Crackberry article I read it appears that all but the Gemini will be 3G devices.
