I had a hard time explaining to customers a reason for the 18 dollar upgrade fee......the reason id use? every carrier does it.......for a while t mobile didn't.....then they conformed to the standard. Good thing is they were smart of to realize the standard isn't people use t mobile, so i'm glad they got rid of it, one more reason for me to say.....renew your plan with t mobile and pay no activation/upgrade fees, go to another carrier and pay double...enjoy

For what I'm aware of, that still leaves AT&T & Sprint charging an upgrading fee. Verizon only charges an upgrading fee if you do an early upgrade (for those on plans $49.99 & up and upgrade 1 year into a 2 year contract, or those on the same plan, & have had multiple defective phones replaced), which then it's $20. Verizon doesn't charge an upgrading fee if you do a normal upgrade, which is 10 months into a 1 year contract, or 20 months into a 2 year contract.
