I've always thought that this was inevitable. Since AT&T bought out Dobson, I knew it was only a matter of time. Here in Michigan, AT&T will now be able to cover the entire state with 850 MHz coverage except in some areas, but they already have a great PCS network built in those areas. I know it means less competition in the state, but it makes for a much more uniform and complete network. That way you don't have to roam when you go to those areas and those customers can now access the AT&T network like it's their home network.

I just hope Verizon gets around to buying out some other small companies around the Midwest as well. Like Cellcom, Illinois Valley Cellular, and Thumb Cellular.

The only market in Michigan that AT&T won't have an 850 license (unless a sway takes place) will be the Grand Rapids market. At least for now, once the Alltel buyout is finalized, Verizon will hold both licenses. But I'm not surprised AT&T is going after Centennial Wireless. Outside of Lake & Porter Counties of Indiana, AT&T's coverage isn't the best away from the highways and some heavily populated cities & towns.

I believe Illinois Valley Cellular, Cellcom, & Thumb Cellular will be bought out eventually. Verizon has limited PCS coverage in Illinois Valley Cellular's coverage area, and Verizon relies on their network for areas they don't cover. Verizon does the same thing in and around Green Bay & Sheboygan; relying on Cellcom + USC...

Well actually, the very same markets that Verizon will have both A & B sides in after the Alltel merger are the same markets that AT&T doesn't have any licenses. Besides the Grand Rapids area, there's the Lansing area and the Saginaw-Bay City-Midland area. AT&T covers all of those areas pretty well with PCS coverage.

There are two sides in the cellular spectrum. They refer to them as the A and the B sides. The carrier that has the spectrum in the lower 800 MHz area is the A side carrier and the carrier with the spectrum in the higher 800 MHz area is the B side carrier. Here's a link to a map of the US with the A and B side carriers shown. You'll have to do a little updating for yourself.

this company has such a little amount of towers and they are in debt to their eyeballs. if this was suppose to counter VZW aquisition of Alltell thats hilarious. Basically ATT took on 1.1 million subscribers, and probably only 700k will remain with ATT, and they got about 60 million in debt as well.

My mother lives in Indiana and AT&T used to have such a strong foot print there, and now they no longer do. She will follow my lead and switch to Verizon when her contract is up.

My experience:

With AT&T, the signal bars constantly moved up and down when I was on the phone, causing me to occasionally cut out, or for the other person to cut out. And there was some static now and then.

With Verizon, the signal is much more stable, even if I only get two bars. It does not bounce around like AT&T and the calls I make are much more clear without any static.

That's just a GSM thing. Here at my house in rural Michigan, I can get three bars on my phone and I still can't make a good call. I constantly drop calls or my calls are distorted. I really have to have almost full service to make a good call.

With Verizon, since they're CDMA, only having 1 bar is enough to make a great call. Heck, you can have 0 bars as long as it still displays "Verizon", and make great calls. I think it's just a CDMA thing that you can't have distorted calls or dropped calls.

Well, they are the B side carrier for the "Thumb" of Michigan. They are a CDMA company that have the BEST service of any carrier here. AT&T has the A side license and they don't even match what T.C. has.
