As a salesman in the wireless industry, I'd say the above parties would not be interested in providing free service when customers are already willing to pay, and virtually nobody is complaining about. I hear a lot about contracts and phone cost subsidies, the whole 5GB data cap thing, open handsets, and the proportionally higher taxes on cellular bills, but nobody really minds paying for broadband. I just don't know what company would want to invest in a system that would provide free service, essentially a zero return on investment.

If I were the winner of the spectrum auction, ...

how about instead of free broadband, they offer free dial up?

not only that, what is comcast, and other high speed internet providers gonna do?

att, sprint, vzw wont sell anymore aircards, people say 'nah ill get the free service"

nothing is life is free, thats why its called freedom, cause if you think its free then you dumb lol 🙂

Actually I think it would be a smart Idea for a company to take on the project but require a spectrum contract from the FCC for every Town the offer free broadband they get blanket coverage So whatever company offers it has virtually perfect reception and require customers to have a phone with you to get the free broadband. The profits on broadband web arent very high anyway so this would let companies focus on mobile web and better reception.

🤣 🤣 🤣 what planet are you from? Broadband isn't profitable? Customers are paying $15-60/month for tethering, depending on their carrier and price plan, and $40-80/month for broadband aircards, again, depending on carrier and price plan. And data is typically a more profitable thing to sell than voice because the connection typically doesn't need to be continuous.

Mobile web? Please. Mobile web plans are anywhere from free with service to $15/month ($30-50 on a smartphone). And improving reception? That isn't always a profitable endeavor either, as it ...

The profit margin on voice and sms and mms is much higher than the profit margin on Broadband.

Cellular companies make roughly 87% profit on vocie sms and mms service where as the profit margin on Broadband is more like 35% the only reason every company offers it is because its a hot commodity.

As far as Mobile web goes more and more consumers get turned on to Mobile web every day. Even if its just to check your email from the exchange server at work more and more people are reliant on it. If mobile web wasnt a big deal then AT&T and Verizon wouldnt be desperatly trying to catch up with Sprints Mobile Web service. That is set to Launch 4G up to 18 months before the fore mentioned parties.

Let's break that down: assume a customer has a $20 SMS plan, like Verizon's 5000 msg feature. 87% of that would be 17.40. A $60 broadband plan would net $21 profit at 35%. That's still a sizeable amount of money per contract. I expect that profit margin to increase in favor of the carriers as more people activate service and the people that have activated service start upgrading their cards (a...
