That's what they said about Nextel and iDen, funny how that turned out. 🙄

In case you're not being sarcastic... it didn't turn out very well at all: iDen is a highly proprietary developmental dead end that Sprint has to very carefully replace, otherwise they lose a lot of customers/revenue. Then there's the financial disaster that was the Nextel/Sprint merger. iDen was a good solid quick buck for Motorola, but will be basically a footnote in the history of mobile telecom.

WiMax may or may not be the same thing, but no one knows yet.

You are very ignorant, Wimax is used in 100 countries. LTE is still in theory (laboratory) with no real world test with a projected launch date of 2012. By that time Wimax is projected to have over 30 million customers in the US alone.

Thank you! not to mention, if the technology is sucessful, whos to say other carriers wont jump aboard? this is just like when everyone dropped TDMA and went GSM or CDMA...jury's still out, but wireless industry is going to change a great deal in the next couple of years. but microwave access...should I start my chemo now? or later...

That's one of the things I was thinking. Everyone in the world is on GSM, yet Sprint and Verizon are doing pretty well on CDMA. Someone always has to be the first to use a technology and they either sink or swim. You don't know how Sprint is going to do. WiMAX might come along and do something great. Remember when Verizon and Sprint passed up the iPhone? Now, both companies are scrambling backwards to make phones that are look alikes. No one can determine success.

That link, in the begenning of the article said which companies and where are not publicly available.

I stopped reading the article at the point of reading "not publicly available"

And with regards to WiMax Vs. LTE, I read recently that even China is going to deploy LTE, that surprised me.

I think the point that I was trying to make is that once again Sprint is trying something different, I think if you read through wimax's web site there are a few operating networks worldwide but everyone is just using them for data only from what I could read. sprint trying to use this as a 4g tech with voice and data. probably voip over a internet device should be rely interesting to see how well it works as for LTE Verizon announced a 2009 launch and AT&T a 2010 so lets see if they can get that done. Also Verizon announced CDMA REV c at ther developers conference a hybrid CDMA with RUIM cards basically a sim card the first device they say will support this is the BB thunder as always wireless is a fun industry to watch

I don't think they will get killed. However, I am not sure why Sprint has not managed to look into a technology that allows both voice and data use simultaneously. This mean there are three network running at the same time which increases capex! They should be focusing that money on a much needed house cleaning. 👀
