Why are they still in business

I remember reading that they were looking for a buyer. Why are they still in business? Why didn't sprint or verizon take them yet? I heard that they don't even have their own towers and use verizon/sprint.

Um.... actually Alltel did get bought by a private equity firm and has always done pretty well. They have got to be making a fortune from roaming agreements with all of the rural southwest that they cover.

you should really check your information before making yourself look like a idiot on here.Alltel is owned by a private investment firm and operator of America's Largest Wireless network (roaming partners included in this claim) they have over 13 million customers and the fifth largest carrier within the US. They have their own towers in 40 states. Verizon and Sprint roam off of Alltel and vise versa

See, I think the purchase of Alltel would have been a better move for Sprint than the purchase of Nextel. Here is a company with a nice footprint as far as coverage goes with the same network technology...I just don't get it.

Well, not really. Alltel isn't losing customers, but both them and T-Mobile are far behind Sprint as far as customer base goes. Even if Sprint lost a million subscribers a quarter, it would take almost a decade for Sprint them to drop down to T-Mobile's level let alone Alltel. It's like saying Apple is in a better position than Microsoft when it comes to computer. Microsoft's Vista sucks, but is still on top.

Umm..... You can't compare Sprint to Microsoft. Sprint loses money, Microsoft grows it. Microsoft controls the industry, Sprint...... At the pace of 1mill per quarter your right it would take a while. But Sprint wouldn't continue to lose money for that long. They would be gone after 1-2 years tops, of losing money at that pace.
Out of the big five, none of them grew their customer base from "scratch". Most was done by mergers and purchases. Both of the Death Stars got there not because their the best.
As far as a Sprint purchase goes.... Arguably Alltel is the best fit for them.

Okay, sure, bad example, but you get my point. The question is, do you really think the joint owners of Alltel have the funds to acquire Sprint? It's stock has only fallen in the last year and has been rising ever since Hesse has taken over. Actually, it has almost doubled since its lowest point. Changes like that can put hope in the eyes of shareholders.

So if Alltel's parents have the money, they should probably act quickly.

Agree! The faster the better. The flip side.....really Sprint stock could only go up.

And yes with TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners (of Goldman Sachs) purchasing Sprint is a defiantly an option.

Picture it.... Alltel's success combined with Sprint's large customer base, and then the investment firms sticks Alltel/Sprint back on the market as one company....it's possible, but not likely.....

But I am a believer that Sprint will fully recover . I would like to see Sprint take on LTE for their 4g...... but they still have time.

Great post, great info Jeff!

Um, sprint's stock has certainly NOT doubled since Hesse took over. I've been watching it for awhile. It's at 8.68 right now. When I was thinking about buying, (january) it was 10.35 a share.

In matter of fact, the one year estimate going around is it'll hit 10.68. I doubt Mr. Dan will fix sprint dramatically anytime soon.

They have their own cell sites. Their coverage in eastern NC is 100% better then Sprint or Verizon.

Why is WHO still in business? Alltel? They are still in business because they are one of the best, if not the best, carrier.

And that would be funny if Sprint buys Alltel. Back in the early to mid 90s, it was called Sprint. Then the name changed to 360 - that was when we got cell phones - 1996. Then sometime later it changed to Alltel and has been Alltel ever since.

Alltel (Sprint/360/Alltel) has had their own towers since day one in my area. In fact we get the best coverage of any carrier in this region. We've never switched to another carrier but I know people who have and they came back to Alltel cause the other ones sucked.
