Why Rev A?
This is great news! What I do not understand though is why the test was from Rev. A to LTE when to my knowledge there are no Rev. A handsets currently in use...only Rev. 0. The only Rev. A devices are data cards, no?

There is one rev a handset now and as we see more data intensive applications, I can imagine that we'll see more of them. The 6800 or mogul by sprint can be upgraded to rev a. Mostly the lte standard and evdo are for data exchange, so the standards committee wants to show the folks that are using it (aircards and some other telemetry applications) that they won't have to choose, or worry. To make the 3g/4g jump seamless will improve the consumer's perception of service. I can't imagine a more important series of tests. I'd want to see if they are going the other way as well.

Not unless your using a VOIP system, no. Rev A. and LTE are the data side of the carrier network, not voice.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm not really sure what the bandwidth would be like if they did away with voice channels and moved it all to data, but I suspect it would be more efficient.

I believe it would be more efficient too. But I doubt it will happen because there is already a huge voice infrastructure that has been established.

Actually, it's the wave of the future. If an overhaul needs to be done, it will be done as long as it's profitable. Look at what happened in the late 80's. Verizon said it will go digital and they did. In fact, they shut down analog areas this year.

This has already been done. In Brazil and Argentina the have had Wimax for about 5 years now and use it in some cases more than that of standard cellular. It is usually around the bigger cities.

There are very few Rev A handsets right now (one or two PDA's and most data cards). However, Rev A allows for a Quality of Service specification. This will let network operators deploy such services as PTT or voice over Rev A, as this setting can let the network determine if a packet needs low latency, high bandwidth, etc. Rev 0 doesn't allow for this. That's probably why they used Rev A.....so they could do test the handoff with a standard data call, as well as low latency packet-ized voice call.
