WHy not quad band GSM on this phone? Unlock it while you are at it.

I just got back from Germany and used my unlocked GSM phone. I bought a prepaid T-mobile sim card. Incoming calls were free. Calls to 800 numbers were free so I could use my ATT calling card to call back to the US without using cell minutes.

It is MUCH cheaper to use an unlocked phone and get local sim cards in Europe.

Anybody with half a brain that travels extensively would tell ATT an VERIZON to take their worldwide capabilities and put them where the sun don't shine.

AT&T may sell locked GSM phones but you can unlock them and use them anywhere. It's worth it to unlock it and use the phone with prepaid local SIMs in other countries. Plus AT&T has some pretty awesome phones(although I'm aware of the phones they sell there.)

I agree about the phones; lately they seem to be getting all of the releases. But how good is their system? Love 'um or hate 'um, Vz is in my opinion the best for coverage and voice quality and I'd hate to lose that. My wife has Tmob because of the the international travel thing but the system doesn't compare to Vz.

Did I read that right? Unlock a GSM phone on request? Why would they do that since their CDMA?

it hasn't always been that way, but a month or two ago they said anyone with a GSM/CDMA device they would give the unlock code on request. You have to call customer service to get it

No. I work in customer service/tech support and we can't unlock a GSM phone. What are you referring to? The phone would have to be in our database (DMD) to activate the phone.

They are talking about the Blackberry 8830 (CDMA 1900/800 GSM 1800/900) world phone and the newer ones like this that we are getting. I work in retail sales at VZW and I have had 3 unlocked from the World Wide Care Department. check you M&P's on your VZW infodesk friend :-)

PREACH IT!

honestly, unlocked is the ONLY way to go global. Only problem is, you just can't keep using your current number overseas.
