It almost seems like they're making these moves so they don't have to buy those guys.

I highly doubt those will be purchased by VZW anytime soon. Alltel, between mergers, was required to divest several markets which were picked up by US Cellular. That can guess it will take US Cellular out of the Alltel game. Now, Verizon won't be able to pick up Alltel because there would be MANY divestitures, for example, I could see how whole states, such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, even vast parts of Minnesota, just to name a few areas, which would be required to be divested because Verizon and Alltel are the only two regional/national carriers. These areas would probably not fetch a proportional price to the premium the company would have to pay for them.

However, US Cellular could be somewhat of a t...

Yeah. AT&T already bought out Cellular One/Dobson.

I'm hoping Thumb Cellular is next to be bought out by Verizon. (If that's possible)

thumb celluar is the cdma company in the entire thumb part of michigan, where VZ doesnt have any coverage, besides extended network.

It would be a nice buy for them, even though the only thing up there is amish, mechanics and trees. 🤣

I live in Caro, MI which is in the thumb. So it would be AMAZING if Verizon bought out Thumb Cellular since Verizon completely surrounds Thumb Cellular, it would be a PERFECT fit into their network. (And I would no longer be in Extended Network, LOL.)

I am with Verizon because I spend as much time out of the thumb as I possibly can, LOL. Also, I'm going to school in Saginaw and I now have a job in Saginaw. My friends have all moved over there too after high school. So why would I want Thumb Cellular who would charge me 50 cents a minute to leave the thumb when I could be on Verizon and roam for free while in the thumb?

I don't see where that would be a problem. Verizon doesn't have coverage there, but supposedly has PCS licenses for the Thumb portion of Michigan.

It would be much better for them to purchase Thumb Cellular and have 850 MHz coverage then to use PCS out here in the thumb because everything is so rural. They would have to put a tower every couple miles to cover everybody! I know Sprint is putting up towers in one part of the thumb but that's because it's corporate there and not iPCS. I don't know the coverage can't be that good.

I know Verizon coverage in SW Michigan, once off of I-94 is spotty. But you're right, PCS requires more towers than 850 does. If I remember correctly, Verizon's I-94 coverage has towers every 2 - 3 miles, since I rarely had less than 3 bars out of 4 bars.

Actually, AT&T is purchasing Cellular One with the Dobson acquisition.

The largest Cellular One company, Western Wireless, sold out to Alltel a few years ago.

Its funny how the FCC will approve this sort of monopoly thing going on, but they sit in things that will help the consumer price wise like with the satrad merger.

they are explanding to quickly with this aquisition, and the customers are going to suffer.

Baby bells anyone? Hahaha.

It's not a monopoly, it is only considered a monopoly if ownership of said assets does NOT allow for competition. In this case there is nothing (externally) stopping another cell company from coming in and setting up shop along side VZW out there in BUMF**K no where.

and when they buy up all the CDMA, they WILL be a monopoly over Sprint, because they will be able to offer prices that far outprice Sprint, and coverage to boot.

Jackass.

Wow, going for the grade school name calling huh?

Before you start calling me names, do some research first. The FCC has rules in place they prevent companies from owning both sides of a specific spectrum, therefore VZW can't "buy up all the CDMA" as you so eloquently put it.

Therefore, if SPRINT had the inclination to, they could develop their network in that area.

Just because Verizon has better coverage and better price point DOES NOT constitue a monopoly. Thats just competition.

It would look at market conditions not just from the business stand point, but from the consumer standpoint. In a market, I'll use South Dakota as an example, there are two statewide carriers, Verizon and Alltel. Since there are no other statewide carriers, no merger/acquisition activity would be allowed to combine those carriers. There is nothing stopping other companies from setting up shop there, well, maybe unprofitability, but since only one company would be offering that service, it would be considered a monopoly.
