I read somewhere on another phone related website that the OS updates for the specified timeframes were geared mainly for the Korean variants only. Is this true?

I don't think that's accurate. LG issued that press release in Korea, then a few hours later issued it again but in the US. Also, their US PR people reached out to me to make sure I saw it. They wouldn't do that if it didn't apply to the US market.
