If they would have started out charging full retail for all equipment and have promotional rate plans instead. The idea is not new - in fact I didn't think of - I read it somewhere else here on this board.

New customer wants service. You show them all the phones at retail price and they buy it and its theirs. No subsidy or locking or anything at all. Write the contracts for 1 or 2 years with a promotional price. Then at the end of the contract term, the price goes back to the month to month rate unless a new contract agreement is signed on a current rate plan. This would almost guarantee people would renew and sign a new current rate plan contract every year or two. It would also show people what the phones cost and if they loose i...

Thats actually a very good idea...

Too bad too many customers have gotten it in their mind that cell companies give things away for free if you threaten to cancel...

I think that's a great idea, however I couldn't see Cingular doing that at this point. They make too much money on those people that are out of contract, but are content with their service (and phone) and continue to pay faithfully. Plus, the transition would be extremely difficult for most customers. Most notably, difficult for the ones that come into the store and want everything free.

The only thing that can solve the problem we have now (what you described) is if all carriers worked together and did this. Back as little as 5 years ago phones were not subsidized and there were a lot fewer problems.

The average price per minute has dropped 80% since 1998. And customers bitch more then ever about stuff.

its called competition... one service provider gets cheaper, so other have to follow suite. Thats the beauty of free market in America! Cheap prices 😁

I would NEVER sign a contract if I paid full retail for a phone. This idea has been discussed in depth many times, but I cannot see anyone signing a contract while paying full retail; the reason we sign contracts is to get subsidized pricing on phones! But you're right, it would eliminate a lot of BS.

The phone is what it is. You would sign a contract to get a discounted rate plan. Just like I sign a 1 year contract on my DSL service from AT&T. I can still get service with my equipment without signing a contract but the monthly rate is higher.

So, why wouldn't you sign a contract to save on your rate plan?

this is a great idea, but unfortunately there is no way that verizon or anybody can switch to retail phones and contracts for discounted plans. everybody is already used to the old way and most customers think that phones cost nothing, and so without massive cooperation between carriers(read: hell freezing over) there is little chance of this being implemented.
however, an MVNO could change this. Prepaid plans essentially work this way but with no discounted rate for contracts. So, if Cricket, Boost, Ampd, Helio, Virgin or whatever sold phones at a higher price without contracts(which many are doing) but in addition offered contracts in exchange for lower monthly rates rather than cheaper phones, we could see a big change in that end of ...

i love showing customers the retail price of the phones when they bitch about prices. then when they ask why they are so expensive and other companies are cheaper i just tell them thats because they give a bit more on their 2 year plans.

the best customers are the ones who think they spend millions a month because they have three phones and expect to get a wall charger, a phone case and a bluetooth headset for free
