My $0.02:

Saying? Probably. Happening? Probably not. Past track record indicates it will be at least 6 to 12 months beyond October before UMTS is available in the more general sense. Yes, I believe it will be out in several specific areas of specific cities by October. But everywhere? That would be as likely as there being enough Sony PS3s at launch around the world in November to satisfy demand: Yeah, they'll be able to say they launched, but demand won't even come close to being met.

On top of that, how many people will have UMTS-ready handsets by then or will be ready to buy new ones? The world just doesn't turn that fast. Technology might, but not the unwashed masses of consumers. Look how long it took people to switch from 850MHz...

Well I think there are still markets where Cingular still provides cellular (850MHz) service. ๐Ÿ˜•

๐Ÿคจ It's already available in several cities.

By October, they plan to have it in enough cities to sell it everywhere and say 3G will work in metro areas.

What does that have to do with anything? They can launch it and start selling the phones regardless of how many people already have the phones. ๐Ÿ˜•

So if you knew it was garbage why did you parrot it back on a public forum? ๐Ÿคจ

And Rich is right, UMTS is available now in several markets, so by Oct. there will be enough coverage to sell it nationwide, but (like EDGE was at one point) it'll only be found in the more urban areas.
(Meaning farmer Brown won't be able to stream videos while milkin' Bessy, but he'll be fine when he takes the wyfe out to the big 'ol city!)

Thats cool! I started the thread because I really doubted Cingular would have UMTS deployed in more rural areas by October...

Sorry...must have had all my poles reversed today. From what was told to me by Cingular and AT&T years ago (out here in California), it was 850 that came first and I guess I never questioned that. As far as the rest goes, I was just adding what I had read around the net along with my own experiences with new technology rollouts (such as EV-DO).

Mea Culpa.

Regardless of what it is, I'm tired of the delays and going back to VZW. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ
