if i were to get a blackberry 8830 from sprint for the unlocked GPS capability, could i still tether my phone on vzw's data network? what, if any, would the data implications be?

The only guarantee is that you would have voice and text message capabilities. Any data connection to Verizon with a Sprint phone, reguardless that it's a simular model, will not be guaranteed.
