I have actually had multiple people come in asking about the "Firefly", I think that kids dont need sell phones when they are infants. Lets wait till they get to be at least 14 before we get them one.

I'm in sales in a VZW corporate store, and I too have had people coming in wanting something like this. They've seen the SunCom commercials for the Firefly, and want one for thier kids. However, I had one dude tell me the other day that he's not willing to change carriers just to get one- especially to SunCom. Even if you had one with them, there's hardly any signal to pick up! Guess he'll be happy if we start to carry these little monsters.

I agree that kids shouldn't need cell phones until they are in their late teens, but these days (especially in the bigger cities) kids need a way to reach parents or 911 in case of emergencies. I live in a small town and my kids are with me or a competant adult at all times, so they don't need one, but for parents that don't have this option this is a great idea.

10 years ago this would have been the most ridiculous idea in the world. Don't you wish we could go back to those days.

I think that the firfly and all that is a good idea because all these kids are getting kid napped and what not. Where I live isn't a very safe community and with this option they can actually walk down the street and feel safe with a phone knowing they can reach 911 ASAP

I went to high school in rich white suburbia 3 years ago, and its HILARIOUS the way all these rich white kids have ended up 20 years old with 2 kids, no father, addicted to heroin (more than 1 person I used to know). It's great, cuz while their in high school with illusions of getting to college, living off their Daddies' checkbook, they treat the lower classes like dirt. but then they hit the real world without their daddy to protect them and they become what they hate.

wow you guys are something.
A.) I'm not a hick-born and raised in jersey
B.)I take my education very seriously
C.)Not every rich white boy is a drug addict
D.)I don't get things when ever i want i need to earn it, as hilarious as it sounds YES! even rich white boys earn there cell phones. 😳

you all are mean, not if you excuse me I'm going to go use daddy checkbook to buy the Gucci shades I was checking out.
KIDDING,..god.

I actually love the idea of cell phones. Before they came out I couldn't stand the idea of having to stay at home to wait for a phone call. That concept for me or excuse for anyone else is a thing of the past and for me it is by far very liberating. In NYC kids start in 5th grade being allowed to take public transportation on their own to school, so that is around 10. I think at that point it is good for your kid to have a phone, when they start being able to walk, ride their bike or take public transportation on their own to school or someone else's house, etc. Admittedly when I was a kid I probably would not have liked the idea of my parents being able to contact me all the time. On the other hand if that option would have set them ...

I'd think it would be part of the ol' family plan. If not, same kind of pricing structure that VZW uses, maybe it would be offered as a pre-pay phone. It does look to be a low feature phone, no camera, no color screen, etc.

most kids don't need dumbed down phones, they usually have to show their parents how to use their cell phones, im not sure about all phones but a lot of them can be set to only call certain numbers and recieve calls from certain numbers, and is protected by a password, how is that any different than what these other phones are?

I can understand why there is such a demand for younger kids to have cell phones though, a lot of people i know including whole families have ditched their land line completely for cell service, so everyone in a family needs their own cell phone, unless they are always with someone who does, its not a bad Idea just a new idea and I can see a lot of people moving twards this in the near future.

When people come in for a cell phone for a 9 year old because they canceled school and she is standing out at the road for 2 hours wondering where the bus is....yeah I think it can be a great idea.

I agree, there is a valid need to have communication with your children, they are after all still members of people's families and families spend a lot of time communicating with each other.

Um...hello??? Usually school is only cancelled if there is really a need to cancel it. (majority of the time being weather related reasons) School closings are usually ALWAYS announced ahead of time. Just watch the news at night....so if a kid is standing outside in the morning, waiting for a bus, does this kid need a cell phone? No, I think the kid needs smarter parents. Also, everybody keeps saying that cell phones will help in case the kid is kidnapped....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....do you REALLY...

Up to high school, that excuse works. If a person can't take the time to work AND go to college however....that's just cuz they still got their fingers too far in mommy and daddy's pockets.
