Reliable cell phone coverage at my house would be just GREAT!!!

The question is will the carriers (Cingular I would think) be ready for this in q1?

I'd say "no"...but I've been wrong before. I'm thinking later next year. But great coverage in your home? Aces!

The article mentions UMA, but doesn't specify as to whether it will be able to roam seamlessly from Wi-fi to Cellular networks with voice and data (I'm assuming VoIP) or data only.

Does anyone know? I live in a fringe area for most of the carriers in my area, and use my cell as my primary line. (The coverage at home is JUST good enough to not have a landline.) I'd gladly set up a Wi-fi network in my home to get better coverage for voice calls, but why go to the expense and trouble if it's data only?

From what I've read, UMA will handle Wi-Fi to cellular just fine. At least for voice...I'm not so sure about data services.

in his presentation yesterday, ed zander mentioned both voice and data handoffs for the a910, and the press release from this morning for the cisco partnership also mentions voip. this phone will probably be aimed at corporate users since it will require a special wi-fi AP in order to use the UMA handoff. the APs will use cisco technology, so chances are they're going to be expensive.

Motorola already makes two phones that let you hand off calls to a Bluetooth UMA AP for your home. the service is sold through a few carriers in europe. the bluetooth in these phones is class 1, so i has the same range as wifi. one of the models is even a RAZR. not bad.

Thanks Eric. I've got a RAZR, so perhaps it would work for me, but I'm still not so sure about setting up a VoIP service for such limited use.

Always helpful, thanks.

Ok, I have to ask. Now that we see this is coming out for GSM, when do you think we may see this for CDMA. We all have those problems with coverage at our houses. I live near a community college in my town and for some reason there are very few towers for any of the carriers. Having a reliable signal at home would be great.

From my understanding UMA was designed to work with GSM and not CDMA. I tend to wonder where that leaves CDMA.
