Why do you say that? $59.99 Unlimitted Data on the old 1xRTT's a really cheap rate plan, considering that despite the deployment of UMTS, Cing and AT&T Wireless still offer(ed) their unlimitted data plans on $79.99.
Of course, these are only three companies I know of. I'm not sure who else offers wireless internet for those internetty cards.

On Cingular's PHONES...PDA's and Laptop's are different...to get unlimited access on a PDA, Smartphone, or Laptop, the price is 79.99 a month standalone, or 74.99/month when you add it to a voice plan of 39.99 or higher/month.

BUT Cingular has EDGE data network...that's equivalent with Verizon's broadband access speed, which you have to pay 79.99 to get (and Verizon's broadband access is a much SMALLER service area, I might add)...all Verizon is doing is saying "Hey, if you want slower internet, we'll knock off ten bucks"

EDGE has a peak speed of 200 kbps with averages in the 100-130 kbps range, hardly "equivalent" to EvDO's peak (2.4 mbps) and averages (400-700 kbps) and is not exactly nationwide either. By the time it's deployed over the entire GPRS network, EvDO will nore than likely cover Verizon Wireless' network. So while EDGE has a slight "edge" over 1xRTT (National Access) it's still more in that ballpark than the 1xEvDO (Broadband Access) ballpark. This new pricing simply gives PC Card users who don't want the ability to use the Broadband Access network the option to pay $20.00 (not $10.00) less for that service.

Actually...one of my customer's laptop with a Sony Ericsson GC83 EDGE data card averages about (according to toast.net) 220-240 kbps, personally, I wouldn't believe had I not seen it. (I ran some speed tests when setting up his pc for him)...NOT 100-130 kbps...I know, still a little slower than EvDO...EDGE is available on the Allover network...the only areas where it isn't is areas where Cingular roams off t-mobile, and other GSM carriers. While you are on Cingular's network, you will be able to access EDGE. I guess I should rephrase my saying and relate Cingular's UMTS to Verizon's EvDO...Which unfortunately IS still limited (such as Verizon's EvDO)

Toast.net measures a burst, not an average - it's a snapshot, not a benchmark, so it's not surprising to see a toast.net reading in that area, just as I often see rates in the 3-4mbps range with EvDO - Toast.net doesn't ignore compression and acceleration software either.

Then why are sales and earnings down with Qualcomm? Ericsson, Moto, Nokia all posted strong quarters, but Qualcomm's numbers are down, and they are ranking pretty low in customer service according to a few recent articles.

Also, EDGE and 1xRTT are pretty much the same in terms of speed and there is more EDGE on Cingular's network than there is 1xRTT on Verizon's.

EDGE does avg alittle faster than 1xRTT, but 1xEVDO will blow EDGE away. 1xRTT and 1xEVDO is the same price on PDA phones. A little clarification on pricing. Cingular does indeed charge $79.99 for unimited data when using a card. However, there is a seperate set of data plans for TREO 650 or a smartphone like the 5600. Plan is called Data Connect for PDAs. It is $44.99/month unlimited usage with a $5.00 discount when combined with a voice plan. It is listed on the site under plans then click on data plans Then they of course have media net which is the basic data or web browsing plan for regular handsets.
It really is amazing that we have the same 3 gateways or pipelines available and marketed 3 different ways. It is all just access to wireless web for browsing or data transfer. I think all the carriers could do a better job of selling data. So ma...

Even though they have different pricing levels, verizon not excluded. The companies provide the service on the basis that it will be used for web browsing, not the streaming of media, downloading of files, gaming, etc. Yes, I know that the companies all offer media streaming and such, but they are seperate subscription services. If you read the fine print on the brochures and the customer agreement, you will see that if your usage is deemed as too heavy (downloading too many files) they reserver the right to completely cut off service at their discretion and charge you any termination fees for a breech of contract. That may be nice, but I dont want to have to rely on a hotspot with a small range of only a few hundred feet at best! OK, 5000 locations... whoopy. With verizon or cingular you can connect FAR MORE places! so the data speeds arent as fast as wifi... just get a wifi card in your computer or one with it built in and boom, now you can even take advantage of 802.11G. Granted it may not be available in all areas tmobile is, its probably actually available in more. Another reason they dont limit their downloads is because its wifi, not EDGE or 1x RTT. wifi has a much larger bandwidth than the afore mentioned and can handle more people on at the same time. The service isn't terminated... you are alerted by Mail you weren't over your 50% of total usage allowed... and then they will be anything past 50%... I actually recieved a letter letting me know Im breached the 50%...

i wasnt talking about going over. What I was saying is that if a certain percentage of you TOTAL usage exceeds their specifications they reserve those rights. And I seriously doubt that they would do it on the first occurrance. That's most likely aimed at repeat offenders that rarely use home networks. But the fact is, that it is in the fine print.
