FCC Asks Congress To Back Interference Plan
HAHA TAKE THAT VERIZON!!
MrFisch13 said:Not exactly an astute argument, but one I'll nevertheless agree with. Verizon needs to stop attempting to squash the competition and help the government deal with the dire issue of public safety.
I hate them they think they own wireless and get in everyones buisness
Let's review how spectrum has been always been assigned: BY AUCTIONING IT.
Why in the world should Nextel be handed a dinner plate of tasty spectrum for a bargain price when Verizon is willing to OPEN BIDDING at more than twice what the FCC has proposed they should pay for it.
Also, what I *really* don't get is why everyone is getting so frustrated with Verizon when it's Nextel causing the interference problem in the first place.
"Hi government, we're causing public safety interference. You should obviously give us a tremendous benefit just for complying with the most basic safety concerns".
............sorry, bu...

First, what Nextel is being asked to pay (including cash to the FCC, relinquished spectrum, and relocation costs) is a minimum $4.8 billion. Verizon said it would pay $5 billion for that spectrum. So it's not quite the overwhelming windfall for Nextel that Verizon would like to make you think.
Second, it's a bit misleading to say that "it's Nextel causing the interference". It's not that simple.
Nextel is using spectrum legally obtained, in exactly the way the FCC said they could.

This interference problem needs to be taken care of immediately...before this country suffers another disaster akin to 9/11. We (as a country) don't have the luxury of waiting this out. End of story.
Yes, the FCC screwed up by allowing Nextel to use that spectrum in the first place, but that does not mean Nextel should get a such a sweet deal.

First off (and I think I am correct) didn't VZW say they would be willing to START bidding at 5 billion, so it potentially could sell for much, much more.
Yes, but I take that with a huge grain of salt. The whole point of Verizon saying that was to try an influence the process. They're hardly an unbiased bystander making that statement.
It's possible it would go for much more at auction, and I think it's just as likely that would go for less. The truth is we just don't know how much it would actually go for in a real auction. There's never been an auction like that, of national spectrum, at a time when there are so many national carriers.
Secondly what about the other...
