why not wireless-to-landline?

The only way to inexpensively "save" a mobile number that you'd like to temporarily disconnect would be to attach it to your home line as a 2nd number for distinctive ring. Without this type of mechanism there's no way to "park" a number for later use without having an expensive mobile plan that you don't want.

If anyone's got any ideas on how to "park" a number another way, post it here.

Most mobile providers don't really offer a lower plan but it is available. Most companies have a "loyalty" or "save" plan. Ask your service provider for one of these plans which normally cost $10-20/a month. Much cheaper than a regular plan...
