FCC Issues Last-Minute Portability Clarification

Waiting until the last minute to satisify a long-standing industry request, the FCC yesterday issued clarification on an important Number Portability issue. The clarified rules state that customers must be allowed to move landline phone numbers to wireless companies operating in the same local area, regardless of whether both phone companies share a local switching office. The rules take effect later this month. The clarification means that many more people will be able to move their landline numbers to wireless. The FCC declined to extend the same flexibility to wireless-to-landline moves, citing lack of demand.
