2 questions: WM5? + Voice announce

1) How do I know if my phone already has WM5 installed already? Can anyone with WM5 installed check their phone version for me and see what it says, click:
>Start
>Settings
>System
>Version

2) Does anyone know how to turn on or get the Voice Announcing program? Its the function that announces the person calling before the ringtone plays.

thanks,
loc
I installed WM5 on my phone. The info shows up with this sequence:
start
settings
system
About

The About screen says Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0

Note that you need to click "About" and not "Version." The Version tab tells you some...

Required plan for this phone?

I am considering a SCH-i730. I currently have a Family Share voice plan. Would I be able to keep this same plan? Since the phone has wifi, I would use the wifi to acess email and web. I wouldn't need data access through Verizon. Would I be required to switch to a voice/data plan? I've never had a smartphone so all this is new to me. Thanks!
Nope, you can use the same plan. I advise against this phone though. I loved it at first but honestly, its clunky and there are much nicer smaller pdas you can get. This one is overkill. I use a blackberry curve now. I love it

Best BT Headset - will Jawbone work well

I'm looking to get a BT headset for my i730, and I was thinking about the new Jawbone. Will this work well w/ the i730?

I will probably upgrade to a new phone within the next 3-4 mos, so anything I buy now I want to work w/ the next gen of phones like the i760 or 6800 on Verizon.

Getting Voicemail

When I dial out to get voicemail, the screen backlight goes dark in a second. When prompted to enter my password, I cannot see the numerical keypad on the screen. I've tried different settings, but cannot get the backlight to stay on. Using the pullout keypad doesn't help, because the longest setting for the lights behind the keys is 8 seconds. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
If you are running Windows Mobile 5, here's how you change it:

On the Today screen, tap the battery icon in the top righthand corner. Tap the Misc tab. Make sure that for Device it says Phone. Change the 2nd drop down menu to your choice.

Missed Call / Voicemail Notification

My old phone was a pretty simple Motorola flip type that always let me know when I had missed a call or when I had a voicemail waiting. In addition to the main screen showing this information, the phone would beep or vibrate (depending on the mode I had it in) every 5 or 10 minutes until I acknowledged this missed call and/or voicemail message. Occasionally, that was a pain, but now that I have this i730, I miss that.

Without constantly checking the little balloon at the top of the screen, I have no way of knowing I missed a call. Does anyone know if this phone is capable of beeping periodically to let me know I missed a call? Maybe I could at least get the phone to display "missed call" on the screen until I acknowledge it. Thanks.
There is no perfect solution for this with the i730. I just upgraded to WM5 and the notification is a little better. You have to go into the notification settings and you can set missed calls and voicemails to beep, vibrate, both and/or put a messag...

I love my i730...

The only complaint I have (or at least can think of right now) is that the directional pad is too small and awkwardly-shaped, being that the Up & Down keys are way too skinny. I always hit OK by accident.

Other than that, I can't get enough of it. I'm writing this from my i730 now.
I just got a i730, been playing around w/ it for a few weeks now. My complaint so far is I always keep hitting the record button on the side.

Is there anyway to make that less sensitive, or require 2 presses before activating?

Samsung i760

Anyone know when this is being released by Verizon? I'd like to see this phone along side the 6800 to decide which is better.
July 4th for the i760
July 18th for the 6800

Buying used i730 - is ESN good?

I want to check out the i730, I haven't found any stores near me that still has them in stock, but I found a person selling one in great condition.

He says he bought the phone new 18 mos ago, but had to switch carriers w/ a new employer and needed a GSM phone that worked overseas.

How can I tell him to find out the ESN number, so I can check it being good w/ Verison. Once I have the ESN, what do I do, just call Verizon 611 from my curent phone and ask them?

High Frequency Noise

I just got a Samsung SCH-i730 the other day and already have had a few strange quirks. First, I had to do a hard reset on the phone after I got it to enable the text messaging software (about 4 hours on the phone with Verizon and Samsung tech's to figure that one out). The software was just flat out missing. Secondly, when I was in the calendar I read that you can notify attendees of events with either an email from outlook or a text message....the text message option is missing on my menus. This is my first PDA phone and I am still getting used to the differences between having a PDA and just a regular cell phone. So anyways....it has been an interesting learning curve for me.

Now on to my question, sorry for the rant... When I spe...

Photo Contacts Pro--GREAT PROGRAM!

Hi--

Most of you may already know about this program, but for those that don't this is a great ringtone/picture contact program.

I didn't realize how much I use the individually assigned ringtones until I got this phone and didn't have it. Now I have work contacts/personal contacts separated by ring. You can also assign songs from Windows Media 10 as ringtones for people.

I love this program--works well without any negative affect on phone/PPC performance.

If anyone else has suggestions on great programs, I'd love to hear about them~~

Phone wont turn on

Hi,

I just got this phone recently and whenever I put the phone down and it shuts off or the standby or whatever that is, i cannot get the phone to turn back on unless i do a hard reset or take the battery out and put it back in. I dont know if anyone else has had this problem but if anyone has any idea why it is doing that and how to fix it, that would be great. Thanks

Matt
umm...on the left hand side of the phone there is a little button that slides up and down...phone just goes into standby to save battery. if you slide the button down it will turn the backlight back on...try it and let me know..I've never had a probl...

Best BT Headsets?

A lot of people have complained about BT headsets not working reliably with the i730. I've read that WM5 has resolve most of the issues. Any comments?

I looking for the most reliable, full featured and cost effective BT headset for the i730. I'm considering both caller ID and non-caller ID options.

If you know of some, let me know.

Thanks
I have WM5 along with a basic Motorola bt headset and it works just fine for me
Windows Mobile 5 with Jabra BT125. Works great, but gets static when you have it at +10 feet apart.

Pix Messaging

I was just wondering if it was possible to receive picture messaging with the i730. I know it doesn’t have a camera but can I still receive pictures? Also, can I send pictures via PIX messaging by uploading pictures with my removable memory card? I highly doubt you can but I was just curious.
No.

New User

Ok, I've been a PDA and cell phone user all these years. Its time to replace the PDA and I'm looking at the Samsung i730

I currently have a LG VX8700, with verizon.
Will I be able to purchase a i730, port my exisiting number over to and not buy any data plan? and just use the i730s WiFi abilities to connect to the web?
You'll need to enter you contacts into outlook and use activesync...verizon may be able to upload your phonebook not sure...and yes you can have it without a dataplan but its worthless...the WIFI on the i730 is great..you'll enjoy it

Still worth it today?

I'm in the market for a new phone and considering the i730, but realize it's a few years old and wonder if it's worth it.

I like the samsung u740, but would like more robust PDA functionality.

But, I can't afford another $40/month for the data plan, so am pulled towards the i730 for the wifi. I'm not sure that the Q or the env are worth it w/out the data plan (and no wifi).

Any thoughts?

thx!
Yes its worth it. I bought it 2 weeks ago and love it...WiFi works great...you can buy the 10mb plan as well for like 20 dollars. All the problems people bitch about with this phone i havent experienced with. I did upgrade to windows mobile 5.
