EV-DO is CDMA high speed data. A EV DO card is like a network card that plugs into your laptop and allows you to connect to the internet anywhere in Sprints/Verizons coverage area, which is quickly expanding.

EV-DO is equivalant to broadband speeds.

Coverage area for data, not voice data.

icic.... That's sounds pretty high tech. So will Sprint be chargin' extra for this service, if people want it? Will this eventually be the norm in cell phones?

It will be the norm for CDMA phones, but not all. Im sure there will be a fair shair of phones that will still use the 1xRTT.

If you're using it through a EV-DO card to your laptop, yes they will charge extra. But im pretty sure if your phone has it theres no extra charge for it.

Verizon charges extra for EV DO functionality...why wouldn't Sprint?

The current word is that when the switch does occur that will not change the price . So existing vision customers will get a good deal when they make the switch.

Let's hope. I don't see why they should charge us for it being since we already pay for vision. I say grandfather and maybe charge $5 for new customers if that but since they plan on making it the new standard well for now until they switch to EV-DV. We will see when it happens.

Umm, maybe to offer something a little better than Sprint does. Free..... Not Free. What sounds more appealing?

And don't go into details of how VZW is better than Sprint in other ways, the focus here is EV-DO.

Ah, now I get you. Don't expect Sprint to just switch customers from Vision 1xRTT to Vision EV DO without a price hike.

I'm not getting where you're going with that first statement...it's worded kinda funny.

And why would I go into details of how VZW is better than Sprint in other ways...and why are you bringing that up? I didn't say zip.

Actually, Verizon doesn't. EV-DO costs the same as 1xRTT...you just have to have the right equipment.

I was referring to the handsets.

I just got a new Sprint Treo 650 direct from Palm and am just about to activate it. I'm curious if this model is "the right equipment" to be ready for Sprint's EV-DO?

Thanks,

Nope, it's not EV-DO enabled, sorry. It uses the standard 1xRTT for data.

Thanks for your reply HeroPsychoDreamer. Do you know if Sprint or Palm have any plans for an EV-DO enabled Treo? I know Verizon's got EV-DO rolling out already so I'd be interested in knowing if they plan to have an EV-DO capable 650 - as well as Dial Up Network capability. Maybe I should bite the bullet (and the early termination charges) and jump carriers.

Sorry, I have absolutely no info about Treo releasing any EV-DO capable devices.

But, if you are looking for the fastest high-speed data, Verizon has it now, but I'd check if they have it in your market first.

There's also Cingular, with EDGE, not as fast as EV-DO but it's fast. Cingular offers, in my opinion, cooler phones that actually have fully enabled Bluetooth. But if that cool gadetry of a phone isn't as important as high speed data, I'd say Verizon is the way to go. Just my opinion.

Thanks for your help.

I am mainly looking for fully enabled bluetooth to go "mobile" on my laptop. I don't need this capability on a regular basis and not enough to buy a EV-DO phone card for my computer.

But it would be a great thing to have through my phone if I need it. I don't have to have the highest data rate. But since EDGE and EV-DO are just here and growing, I'd rather get on the bandwagon now... or hang onto Sprint with my Treo and change a year or so from now.

Best regards,

Sprint will be deploying EV-DO about mid-year, so staying with Sprint won't be all that bad of an idea. Now you only need a EV-DO capable phone... and Bluetooth DUN enabled as well.

Good luck and best regards,

Thanks, HPD.

I waited almost a year to get the new Treo 650 hoping to be "up with the times" and already I'm behind the curve. Sounds like I'll have to be happy with Vision-download rates for the time being and the work-arounds for DUN that I've heard about. And maybe I won't take a 2 year plan next time. The discount I got from that is not necessarily worth the boxed in situation I'm in now.

You can find out a lot about EVDO at:

http://www.EVDOinfo.com »

Tons of tips, news, product info, maps, etc. The site isn't setup to sell you anything, just put out good EVDO information.
