Updated: added info about multitouch support, corrected plan pricing info

Today Sprint announced that the HTC Hero Android phone will be available for sale starting October 11 for $180 after rebates with new agreement. The Hero, first announced earlier this year, has HTC's customized Sense user interface and tight integration with Google services such as Gmail, Maps and YouTube. It features a 3.2-inch touchscreen (with support for multitouch), 5 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, accelerometer, visual voicemail, support for 32GB microSD cards, GPS and access to the Android market. The Hero requires a Simply Everything plan.

Required plan is not atleast $100

HTC Hero requires activation on a pricing plan offering unlimited data. Sprint’s Simply EverythingSM plan provides unlimited nationwide calling, texting, e-mail, social networking, Web browsing, GPS navigation, Sprint TV, streaming music, NFL Mobile Live, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile and much more for only $99.99 per month. That’s a savings of $1,200 over two years vs. a comparable AT&T iPhone® plan2. Sprint Everything Data plans with unlimited messaging and data start at just $69.99 for 450 minutes with unlimited night and weekend calling starting at 7 p.m. (All price plans exclude Sprint surcharges and taxes.)

You can start out with the 450 Everything Plan if you like. It is $69.99/month.

Another phone I will not be able to add to my family plan.

I have my Niece, Nephew, Son and Wife under my plan. They do not require data. For me to get the Pre,Instinct or the new Hero, It would require me to either stand alone on my own plan or have everyone else under my plan to be charged an additional 10 dollars each. Either choice will cost me more than our alloted budget. I need to ask Sprint and their Reps why they can't just add the extra to my Phone only? It is only fair and makes sense. I have checked with TMO. They do not require this practice. My Niece and Nephew are in their first year of college and have made it clear that they will not pay the extra for something they don't have or want and I certainly am not willing to pay for what is not being used. Can someone clarify a sensible an...

Verizon will allow one phone with everything, and then the others will just have the shared voice/txt as well.. it's odd that they have that stipulation.. ah well, if things made sense, they wouldn't be corporate, right?

Best of luck getting this...

The new everything shared plans Sprint share plans are HEAVILY discounted plans VS AT&T & VERIZON. The plans already incorporate all the data and messages and doesn't allow add-ons to flagship phones. The 1500 min. Data plan is $70 cheaper per month ...

Disappointed

Although I will still be purchasing this device, Im a little disappointed that they changed the design from the Euro model. That model was eye candy, and this one just looks regular. 😲(

With prices like these....

its gonna be hard to put up 450 for the Touch Pro 2. Im not saying that I wont put the money. Itll just be a lot harder. I am seriously gonna check out the pre adn android phones....they are a lot cheaper. Other than it being a Windows platform what is the biggest difference?
its a huge difference from windows got to htc.com/europe/ and watch the videos for the phone. it shows how the android system works on this phone. i like it but i may still wait for the diamond 2. not sure if im ready to give up winmo. but the hero is...

Meh

How come this phone gets visual voicemail and we cant get that on the Palm Pre....WTF?!?!
This blame goes to Palm, and not Sprint. They didn't get the coding on time, and then try to give out a BS answer like, it doesn't blend with Synergy. You might end up on a major update though.

Flash Support

Does anyone know if the Sprint's HTC Hero web browsing will have flash built into the browser? There is no mention for flash support in the Sprint's HTC Hero specs. I think that one of the distinguishing factor of the European version of Hero is the Flash support for the web browser on the Hero phone.
Well according to the specs we have here in Sprint customer care it will be flash enabled. For those of you wondering what it'll cost its gonna be 329.99 MSRP with 2yr 179.99 after 100 dollar instant rebate and 50 dollar mail in rebate. If u got an up...

Browser

Does anyone knows what kind of browser Android phones use?
Answered my own question. I see that they use Opera Mini, and are working on Opera Mobile for it as well. Skyfire also said that they after done with their BlackBerry version, they'll most likely work on the Android platform. Hmm.

MEH

I didn't see the specs as far as the RAM and CPU but if its the same as the Hero then no thanks. The Hero is a decent phone but old hardware with new OS/UI. Sense UI is great but will be incredibly laggy on the Hero. Go read some reviews and they all say its laggy.

I've been running Hero on my G1 for a while and with it heavily optimized it still is slow. IMO the Rachael or the Galaxy lite is were its going to be at. 🤤
I was thinking the same thing until I read this artical...http://www.connect-utb.com/index.ph p?option=com_content&view=article&id=179:htc- hero-the-qualcomm-528mhz-cpu-is-enough&catid= 36:technology.
