Today Apple announced a new version of the iPhone, called the iPhone 3GS. Major improvements over the iPhone 3G include a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and VGA video capture at 30fps, and 7.2Mbps HSDPA. There's a touch-to-focus feature that allows users to touch the area of the screen that they want the camera to focus. It also has a built-in compass, improved battery life, faster peformance, voice commands, and hardware encryption. It will go on sale June 19. The 32GB model will be $299 and the 16GB model will be $199. Apple is also dropping the price of the iPhone 3G to $99 starting immediately.

WAKE UP SHEEP!!!!!!!

Don't you see what Apple is doing? They are making a phone that is capably inferior to other products. I said capability inferior. They are making a phone that does not have normal functions cause they know that you will buy it anyway. Then they will give you a little bit each year to make you buy a new phone. How many of you have bought each and every version along with accessories that only work for the phone. Its not even a smartphone for crying out loud. I love playing with it but its just a toy.

My only question is. Can you have multiple applications open at the same time and switch back and forth with out them having to reopen? I have been unable to figure that part out. If I can figure that out then maybe Ill change my s...

Apples a good product, The Pre is a good product.

Toys to some, business tools to others, modern day walkmans to still others.
Both are smartphones. Get over it

Sure, bash on the people that have the iPhone, then make a comment about what it'd take to get one, while sounding like you're already using one.

Seven email accounts? Do you have, like, 6 jobs and 1 personal account? Is that really necessary?

I...

Seriously, what do you want Apple to do? Release a phone with a bunch of features that work crappy? If you want that, go to WinMo. There are plenty of phones that do a lot of stuff and do them all poorly.

iphone 3GS is basically the iphone 3G!!!

Seriously, how may times can Apple fool their fanatics, this is 3G redux. It happened after the 1st generation iphone now it is happening again, Apple is putting out another same old device, adding features the original iphone should have had, and are trying to market it as "innovation." Still no MMS, no Multitasking. The iphone 3GS is basically the same as the 3G, 3MP camera, an unlocked processor, and?.... If the Apple fanatics can't see that Apple is mostly interested in the "app store", they will remain fools of many. This "iphone 3G update", has nothing on the Pre. If people actually believe this 3G updated version will achieve 7.2Mbps on AT&T, they are crazy. From many of the various iphone/Apple dedicated blogs, a lot of current...

Did you miss the whole all-new-guts thing? The 3GS sports a faster processor, longer battery life, faster network connection, etc.

it says it adds mms...and multitasking...
Of course... If it's not broken why fix it? Why would they spend time remodeling this device when it is soooooo popular and many of the other manufactures are following suit i.e. LG VU...Samsung Eternity... The form factor doesn't need an update...It...

I am by no means an Apple fanatic but the increased data speed for the new phone is the main reason I will get it. I use my phone to access the internet and email rather than carrying a laptop.

Faster speeds is of prime importance to me.

3GS and ATT Upgrade Question

So, I have the iPhone 3G. Since day one. I understand that I am not eligible for the subsidized 3GS pricing. I more or less understand the business philosophy behind this decision. But, my wife wants an iPhone now and is eligible for an upgrade. She would be perfectly happy with my current 16GB version. My question is, does anyone know if we can purchase a new 3GS for her line (qualifying for the subsidized price) and then switch devices?

If not I'll probably wait to upgrade my line and just roll with 3.0. And buy her a 3G for $99.
yes go to your nearest retailer...

Palm Pre Kills

Unfortunately an updated camera isnt going to help the iphone's chances. (no flash) The pre's system is too advanced and it is built for multitasking and simplicity. Look at this video and enough said!

BTW, i personally used both phones so i know what im talking about as well. Also another thing people might not know about the Pre is that you can have multiple web browsers with different web sites opened at once, switch between them, sort them out in order sequence of your likings, and even view them all on one screen.
The iPhone doesn't have full multitasking yet, but the underlying technology on the iPhone is far more robust. The application framework is light years ahead of what Palm is offering.

Palm's multitasking isn't fully baked yet. The device I used exp...

I think it is going to be funny watching PALM and their big EGO crash and burn!
yeah that's an impressive new iphone, very cool stuff...the pre is already old news and didn't do very well this weekend with only 60k units sold. the new iphone will sell that many in a few hours.

quite an immature topic
Both are awesome devices. The Palm operates a little differently than the iPhone but it clearly was inspired by it and they made an excellent effort to do their take on it, as opposed to RIM or the Samsung Instinct which were just crappy knockoffs.

How, this is the most hype palm has had since the palm pilot.. they have sold out in almost all stores in just 2 days, just cause the iphone has a new version doesn't take away from the success of the pre sales.

i don't think palm will "crash and burn" like what you're thinking right now..

Where is the new design? And the name? Don't make me yawn. C'mon Apple you can do better than that!
Honestly, what did you expect to change?
It's the iPhone that I would actually consider, finally. Speed is great, and the remote wipe and track are the keys for me.

The rest is no better than I can do on my HTC, so until there is a CDMA version, I'll be fine with my Touch Pro.

So is this all Apple is going to do? keep the same design and add upgrades every 2yrs?

Data Prices?

๐Ÿคจ Same data prices?
Data prices ($30 for Unlimited, $45 for Enterprise Unl) won't be seeing any changes anytime soon. Then again, AT&T is very slow to announce (and enact, for that matter) changes, so it may come down later.

However, if there was a plan price change,...

What the hell is AT&T doing?

This is the crown jewel of AT&T, no ifs, ands, or buts. Yes AT&T carries a better assortment of phones than pretty much every other provider, but really the iPhone is the only phone that matters on their network.

Yet for some reason AT&T is kind of ambivalent about it. Their home page doesn't even have the new iPhone 3GS mentioned... anywhere. There's no MMS support until late summer. Tethering is nowhere to be found (though that's good, because I pop out my SIM card and use my old Sony Ericsson when I need to get on my laptop.)

I don't think Apple is very happy with AT&T at the moment. Although I have no complaints about AT&T (frankly, where I'm at, their coverage beats the pants off of Verizon and Sprint), these guys need to stop sl...

Well AT&T did drop the cost of the present iPhones fairly fast after the announcements. I think they could have been a bit more proactive, but who cares about a day or two, heck Sprint didn't even list the Pre in its stable till the next day and that...

Guy 2:"ehh, I would rather have the 3GS but I bought into the hype that everyone was making about the Pre"
Guy 1: "Isn't that what you did with the Blackberry Storm too?"
Guy 2:"Don't remind me"
Well the Pre, unlike the Storm, is a pretty nice device.

95% Sold on New iPhone 3GS

I bought the first model iPhone not long after release and was fed up after only 2 months and gave it to my husband and went back to my blackberry. The 3G model did not sell me at all. My husband has been devoted to this phone ever since. We just finished watching the guided tour on Apple's site, and I am so impressed I'm strongly considering switching back. iPhone haters (of which I have been for quite some time) are saying that this new phone is really nothing new, but if you watch the tour, it's pretty damn impressive. Not only have they finally given the phone the features that we've all been craving-MMS, Video, copy & paste, etc, but they've done it better than the current phones that boast it. It's voice command capabilities far ...

1sr GEN iPhone STILL BEST!

I for one am going to keep my 1st gen iPhone and use the update. 3.0 has SOME things that are worthwhile, and others that are just toys. I personally despise video on phones, and can use my digital camera for that anyway. I wouldn't use stereo Bluetooth because frankly, it's a battery killer. MMS? Don't really need..nice to have but rarely used. Already able to insert a photo or two in emails on the phone, and that's fine..or just upload to Facebook or Shutterfly. That's fine too. Everything else is great,a dn will probably use it. But I'm not sure they are worth an u[grade. Byt he way, I have tested my 1st gen against 32G versions of the phone, and EVERY TIME I have beat the 3G to sites trough Safari. My older model seems to render the sites...

same plug; charge, accessories etc?

Will it have the same plug so existing accessories work? Anyone had hands on yet that could share. I know alot of mfg. companies (motorola, lg, samsung, nokia) are going to the micro-usb, even the new curve2 8900 has it a break for blackberry for the first time ever.
